    Ivy

No problem turning it. I got a piece of ivy from a felled Alder that the Ivy had been strangling for years. This piece has been sitting underneath my lathe for about 3 years until I can find a use for it. Its never cracked. I did turn a small piece for the Knob on a restored vintage Stanley...

    Pyrography set in Aldi

I started out with one of these cheap and nasty tools. Its basically like drawing with a soldering iron! If the iron has a protective flange its very difficult to scribe. Also, think about the wood you intend to use it on. Passing over grain leaves usually leaves an uneven line. I eventually...

Replace the seals of my double glazings

Stormguard do a number of seals. Usually obtained through Screwfix or Toolstation. I replaced a number of my Upvc window seals with this stuff. https://www.toolstation.com/stormguard-upvc-universal-seal/p57199

    Drying wood

Most of my green turned pieces start out at circa 32%, and i generally bring them down to about 10%. However, my moisture meter does not reveal the true value on thicker pieces, so i also record the weight of the piece. Generaly after 4 to 6 days you get a feel for how dry the wood is, how much...

    Drying wood

I have used a number of methods to dry wood. I currently use an old Beko freezer, stored under cover outside. I have run power to it and installed 2 scones which take incandescent light bulbs(can still get on ebay). Drillied a 2" inch hole towards the bottom of the freezer to allow cool air to...

I wrapped my sold pieces in thin tissue paper, (Ebay) which gave a degree of protection to the high glossy finish and placed it in a cheappy plastic bag (Ebay) with "Have a Nice Day " printed on them

    Stall set up/advice

This my stall at the Much Wenlock Christmas Fayre in 2018. This was the second year I attended and had decided to make a stepped display as well as adding Resin and coloured pieces. I did a mock set up in my kitchen to check and plan the lay-out of the display, which made the set up easier. All...

    Head torch recommendations?

As Hamsterjam said, It depends what you want it for. If you need it for just doing a bit of work under the sink, then get the cheapest. I have have about 3 of these. However, I do have two expensive Petzl Reactik which I use on the hills which are excellent pieces of kit.

    DIY wind turbine....

One of a number of makers channels I subscribe to on YouTube is Kris Harbour Natural Building. Kris is a young chap who 7 years ago decided to move to West Wales(?) to build a house from scratch and live off grid. His videos include a number of power generating projects involving hydro, wind and...

Scheppach HMS 260 (new to me) - Cutter Block Problems

Hi Andy, i've had a Hms 260 for about three years now. Another way to ensure your blade height and level is right, is to use a set of Planing blade gauges (see photo). They are Chinese, quite cheap and nasty, but seem to work for me. I got these from Woodfordtooling.

    Solar panels.

One of the best financial investments I have ever made! Installed 20 panels (5Kw) on a bungalow with 20 deg pitch and south-facing. I wanted 6Kw but Western Power (the energy generator) only allowed 5Kw, something to do with local infrastructure capacity. Back in 2013 I took retirement (with...

    Rod bending

Depending on the shape and thickness of the metal stock you are using, as others have already said, you can either cold or hot form the metal. Cold forming is ok but not as precise as heating the metal up to a forging heat. If you do cold form, you will soon see that you will need to 'over bend'...

    Euro 2022 final

Unfortunately, its what programme producers think "we" want, that is an hour of pre-match Barry '%$&hit' and another hour of post match Barry "%^*hit" dissecting the game given by 'has-beens' or 'never-were beens'. I went to a number of the Euro games and my opinion of Women's football has...

    Hand Plane Restoration

I've done a few No. 4's a 5 and a 7. My favourite is the No6 Stanley Bailey circa 1899. I tried to keep as much as the original patina as possible, but I had to enter the 'murky' world of Japanning to get the look of the bed. There are a number of 'recipes' on the net for the Japanning mixture...

    Resin use

To be honest Inspector I've found it difficult to add colour to Milliput. For instance adding a vibrant red to a white Milliput always gave a very pale pink, no matter what amount I applied. I agree though, Milliput is very useful and easy to work with, although you need to ensure you mix the...

    Safely welding at home

Simple stick welding can be easily picked up by the novice. However, welding in an industrial environment may require certification etc..For the DIY welder basic safety measures need to be considered. So, invest in a decent helmet with auto-darkening, leather gauntlets, arm gaiters and a leather...
