    Turning blanks from logs

Hi Akirk, nice saw job there. Keep a close eye on those newly cut pieces. I generally use candle wax to seal the ends (taken from the unburnt wax in household candles... you know the usually large amount of wax that remains in the glass jar?). If you follow Richards excellent advice on...

    Turning blanks from logs

Hi Akirk, I was given a piece of Apple in the form of a 1m log with a diam of approx 15cm. I turned a number of small dishes/bowls. You can do a number of things to maximise the size of the finished piece. Like others have suggested cut down the pith, to get that tension out. However, you can...

    Another "What species?"

Once you've worked Oak you get a very distinctive aroma.

    Van ramp

I used a 1.5m section of old kitchen worktop to gently lower a bought second-hand lathe out from a Ford Transit. Lots of protective wood underneath should the ramp slide. In the end using gravity, in a controlled manner really helped.

    Rutlands black friday sale

Bought a chuck and set of jaw kits from them a couple of years ago. The steel is already starting to pit and tarnish badly. Would I use them again? Hmmm probably not, especially if it is true about them not tolerating reviews or scores below 5 stars.

    Series 3: Britain's Best Woodworker

I think the term that Paul B uses, namely "arbitrary timeline", can be applied to all TV show maker competitions, be it baking bread, sewing a dress, throwing a pot or blowing a glass, the inclusion of a time limit is purely for dramatic effect, which personally I have no problem with. What...

Using a skew with one hand behind your back!

I think in football parlance this is called "Showboating". There are old turners and bold turners, but no old bold turners.

    Series 3: Britain's Best Woodworker

Hi Teeman, thanks for giving us that insight. I must admit I was infuriated with that first show, not only because of the name of the show, but those two judges were ar***les! I stuck with it for the first series but never watched anymore, simply because they kept the same name for the show...

Condensation on underside of corrugated plastic roofing sheet

I built a large 'lean-to' the full length of my bungalow. The joinery was very simple and I used Industrial grade GRP sheets, meant to allow up to 92% light. Over the years the GRP has become dirty and probably needs a bit of a clean. However, the only annoying thing about the 'lean-to' was...

    Email account has been hacked.

Thanks Dabop for that info. Unfortunately, for me, and I suspect many others this does not work. Writing down a flow flow diagram of the permutations to successfully speak to a 'real person' ultimately loops back to a 'bot' (automatic assistant). You can even get to a free phone number - 0800...
