Buying cheapest wood for woodwork practice in the UK

I cannot remember he last time I ever paid for timber. Here are my 3 top tips for getting your hands on wood. 1. Freecycle: By far the most productive method of acquiring wood. Obvious items from Freecycle, many include Furniture, but I have often found that after speaking to people who you...

I easily remove my bowl nibs by using a small piece of low grit paper 40/60. If you don't want to risk your fingers in a goblet, then just glue a piece of 40/60 to a piece of sponge/foam on the end of a wooden stick.

This is a piece of Alder salvaged from a tree felled after a Winter storm about 6 years ago. In my experience Alder rots pretty quickly, but can include some beautiful grain and spalting. From the first photo you can see how 'punky' the wood was. No amount of tool sharpening will remove the...

This small little fella is turned from a piece of Damson, that has been hanging around for years. I knew things were not going to be straightforward as a number of large and deep radial cracks were visible. Some of the cracks were turned out, but others remained. In keeping with the colours on...

Sorry Pat for not picking up this earlier. That is a great question and one that I did'nt ask myself. So I attempted to mount the piece using that method. I could soon see that the concave interior surface of the piece would not allow sufficient surface area between the spigot and bowl to...

Part 2 Because the wood was relatively dry, the ‘Kiln Gods’ were good to me . However, if you want to ensure cracks will not develop, you need to check your piece regularly.....and a good job I did!Three incipient cracks had started to develop from the centre of an included pith. Because, the...

    Making carbide turning tools

Hi BearTricks, I made 3 Carbide tools, to house the three most common cutters (round, square & diamond detail). I used 10mm square mild steel. If you want a 'beefier' tool go up to 12/16mm square mild steel. I have one bought carbide cutter with round bright steel, which is used for deep vase...

Hi Andy, good idea. What you could have done or even still do, possibly, is to turn it into a Yarn Bowl. You don't have to remount it, just some fine Fret saw/Dremel work.

Part 1 This is a shout out for the much loathed Leylandii. The wood is wonderful for newbies and old Turners alike. It has an interesting grain pattern, is resistant to cracking, is readily available from those felling large trees, usually ends up at the local recycling centre and some...

Worcestershire newbie bowl turner needs a trainer for half a day

Hi John, I am no professional turner but would like to help. If you could make your way across the border into Shropshire you are more than welcome to come to mine to use my lathe and a range of bowl gauges, there is even a small piece of Damson with your name on it, which would make a lovely...

    UK Drills?

I got fed up of buying small quantities of drill bits, so went for one of their large boxed collections. No problem with the company or their products. https://www.ukdrills.com/drill-sets/hss-drill-sets-for-metal/hss-drill-magazine-for-metal
