    Another wood identification puzzle

I've turned alot of Leylandii and its very enjoyable to turn green. As Rodpr says it is resistant to checking and has a very interesting and decorative grain pattern. Not all varieties are aromatic though. I've just finished rough turning a 14" platter, which is in my wood kiln at the moment...

    Digital callipers.

Like al tools you generally get what you pay for (most of the times). I've still got a working Workzone (Aldi one) digital caliper, which I have used extensively for 4 to 5 years. No problem with battery as I generally turn the display off, before the auto shut-off kicks in. Recently bought a...

    Resin 'inlay' on carving?

I have tried adding adding a red acrylic paint to white milliput. No matter how much paint I added I could not emulate anywhere near the same intensity of colour as the paint. I simply ended up with a pale pink colour.

    Big wheel keeps on turning

The type of wood being turned, IMHO, does not matter. Its a case of where the weight is distributed within the piece, that will give you the vibration and wobble. I got given a huge Black Pine (felled because of Red Band Needle blight) recently and have spent the last couple of weeks cutting it...

    Replacement firepit bowl?

I still have the steel drum of a long deceased washing machine , with three legs welded on, in my garden. That worked fine for me.

    Why is it called grain?

Perhaps another way of looking at this is the use and meaning of the word "Ingrained" or "Engrained" with describing something that is fixed, entrenched, established etc....

    Kiln Advice Please.

I built ex-Freezer Kiln a few years ago. I control the temperature by the use of incandescent light bulbs. I use 40w/60w and 100w bulbs which are still available out there. The 40w gives a very gentle heat while 100w is quite fierce. I have never needed a fan as the hot air circulates very well...

    UPVc Window Seals

I did my uPVC kitchen door and a single uPVC window both using the Stormguard uPVC universal black seal on a 20m roll from Toolstation at £18. The biggest problem I found was doing the windows, which had seals both on the frame and window itself and were difficult/awkward to access. Needless to...

    All That Glitters ............... BBC

I must admit there is one feature of these type of shows and that is at the start with the words "coming up....." or "on todays show......", which are essentially spoilers for people like me who like to be surprised and are not just waiting for what was shown in the prequel. I don't want to know...

    All That Glitters ............... BBC

I certainly enjoy these type of competition/reality shows, which include Bake Off, Pottery Throwdown, Sewing Bee or even the American glass blowing programme "Blown Away". The format seems to have settled on a particular format with a generally annoying, unfunny and irritating presenter (the...

    Moss on roof

Hmmm... I did actually read the original post and was quite aware of the context. I was simply relaying my experience of potential damage to the roofing material in response to one of Doug B's comments.

    Moss on roof

I pressure washed the moss of my summer house roof using my 'cheapy' Nilfisk washer. The washer did not damage the felt roof tiles . The quickest and cheapest solution IMHO.

Alder in Chair Making (or other joinery?)

I've used quite a bit of local Alder, particularly in turning bowls. It turns very easy in its green state and has a nice grain pattern. I "rescued" some quite large pieces when a power company cut down a few Alders that were encroaching onto power lines. Most of the pieces ended up in a local...

    Virgin

A few years back while ditching Sky and going back to Virgin, their 'technician' made a right pigs-ear of the wiring feed into our house. I could have tacked it back myself, but because I was paying for the install I made them come back under the threat of cancellation. They came back pretty...

How to remove a carriage bolt from a post without damaging thread??

Hi Unicorn, if the bolt head is clear of the wood and you have or can rig up a slide hammer with a fork that may work

    Virgin

We have been yo-yo-ing between Sky and Virgin for the last 20 years. I don't hold either in any high regard, just looking at how much it costs and who can out do the other with deals. Currently with Virgin, as part of a Black Friday Deal. Issues in our bungalow with Wi-Fi re: coverage as far as...

    Endgrain - cannot sand clean

Hi Graham, Sachakins point " 1, go back to your first grit and don't move up till the marks gone, moving up to next grit to early will always be near impossible to remove with later finer grit. " was the first lesson I learnt about sanding. Taking a final very sharp cut can work, but a slight...

    Coincidentally timed email scam

Look, if you keep your AV software up to date and use good Malware software, refrain from visiting certain 'Adult' sites and do not share your password with anyone, the chances of your PC/Laptop becoming infected is very low. The biggest danger is falling for one the many online scams. I've...

    Home made Tipped tools

Hi Cooper, I made very similar tungsten carbide tools a few years ago. I did get one tip from your photos and that is the way you made an additional metal 'vee' to hold the detailing tool in place. Mine just 'wiggled' around a bit, so i'll get around to adapting mine...so thanks. I did look to...
