First attempt at hydrolysis rust removal

Washing up liquid will trap any hydrogen and oxygen produced...any source of ignition will make a bit of a crack!

Shellac Hardness compared to other finishes

Traditional way to test hardness of a coating is to draw a pencil over it (pressing hard enough to crumble the lead). Work up through the pencils from 6B to 6H. The first pencil that leaves a permanent mark on the coating is taken to be the pencil hardness of that coating. Obviously the pencils...

    Classical guitar repairs?

If the bridge Is going to be replaced anyway there is no need to fanny about getting it off...just chisel it away!

Shellac Hardness compared to other finishes

Exactly right. I used to design paint systems for plastic components in the automotive industry. We invariably found that the hardness of the finish (notch hardness or pencil hardness) was directly proportional to the hardness of the substrate. So any finish will be as hard as the wood as long...

Question and poll - bread of life, or death?

I bake my own, started in January and I've only bought one loaf this year. Usually 1 loaf a week. 500g flour, 1tsp yeast, 1 1/2 tsp salt, 2tsp olive oil, 300g water. I used to use a Panasonic bread maker, but it wasn't quite crusty enough...so it's made by hand now. Sometimes I use 50:50...

First attempt at hydrolysis rust removal

Old power supplies for various redundant equipment (Wall wart type) work well too. I used old phone chargers with the connectors stripped off. If you need more amps, try an old laptop charger. Make sure you strip the wires at the DC side though and not on the mains side!!!

    Classical guitar repairs?

Every guitar is repairable! Looks like this one has been roundly abused though. Steel strings put more tension on the guitar than the nylon strings this guitar was designed for, leading to (amongst other things) neck bow, bridge lifting and bellying of the soundboard. All of these will give you...

    Luthier workshop set up ?

What is the masking tape and superglue trick? I am imagining it, but I'm not sure if I've got it right in my mind.

    Fireworks poll

I love explosions! One of the reasons I love my current job (chemistry teacher) is that I get to blow things up fairly frequently. In this job, blowing something up is seen as a positive thing. In my old job (industrial chemist) not so much!

    The label says no.....

I think the only problem would be thinning the paint to the correct viscosity to allow good atomisation through HVLP. Just add some water (preferably distilled water) to get to a good consistency (there will be plenty of suck it and see here). The amount you need to add will depend on the...

How large a hard drive do I need ?

When you use a hard drive for a while files are constantly being written and deleted and written over again. The hard drive will write those files in whichever spaces it sees and not necessarily in a continuous block. This means that a single 100Mb file may be written in 10 different blocks of...

    Putter togetherer (scissor maker)

They are struggling to keep up with demand after the video went up on the net (especially with Cliff on holiday in Filey oblivious to the stir the video caused). Got an email from the CEO (and van driver) that shows how tough times can be for tiny manufacturers...

I had to buy a pair too. I would also like to buy the hammer! That's the best tool I've seen in ages...the handle is beautiful.

Regarding Victorian stopped chamfer skirting boards

I love to use a drawknife for rough shaping. Like you say, you can remove material very quickly. No messing about with jigs and cutters. You must be careful about the grain direction though, otherwise you will remove more than you expected!

    Rip or cross-cut

I definitely cut out just the board I need...a shed full of L shaped wood will testify to that.
