Sort out your workshop the Japanese way

Gave me a shudder seeing this. Transported me back to a previous lifetime as a supplier into Toyota. Horrendous hoops to jump through as a supplier and I hated them with a passion, but that's why I drive a Toyota car!

Taylor Guitars "The State of Ebony" (Bob Taylor Video)

It's like having a leopard fur coat, that would be seriously uncool...or eating panda and chips! For some reason objects made from exotic, rare woods are still seen as fair game in a way that ivory or fur isn't.

How have you drilled your bench dogs?

Brace and auger bit, no guide...a bit wonky, but they work fine.

Which type of chisel should I use to clear up bulk removal?

I'd use a pig sticker mortise chisel and a mallet. Blade vertical and across the grain. Have something underneath the wood like a towel so that the wood doesn't get bruised by all the whacking! Way before I got into woodworking I made a Rickenbacker copy which involved hollowing out an ash body...

22mm Baltic Birch Ply in Southern UK?

Sorry, I missed your replies...I think the bloke building them has the front baffle supplied with his plans, so he just has to build the cabinet. In the end I think he went for an MDF type board (not MDF, but a similar fibre construction board). A project like this is certainly something I will...

my first spatula made from OAK

I made an oak spoon in Autumn. Like you, I love the smell of oak when I'm using it (mainly because it smells of Rioja!) I didn't really think about the tannin and at first it stained with black marks where I left it on a cast iron pan. After a few trips through the dish washer over the...

22mm Baltic Birch Ply in Southern UK?

That's really useful thanks...though I think he was hoping not to have to veneer. Although I do notice there is a chan e they might have some clear boards.

22mm Baltic Birch Ply in Southern UK?

I have a friend trying to source some 22mm Baltic birch ply for a speaker build. Anyone know of a supplier in the south? He is making these speakers... http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/ScanSpeak-3W-Discovery.htm And he isn't a woodworker, so he needs a supplier that can do cutting.

I'm a chemist. With the stuff I use in the lab, I wash my hands before I go to the loo.

    soprano ukulele

Guitar soundboard and bracing is usually made from spruce (or similar lightweight strong wood). Bracing is cut from straight grained billets. Not sure how critical this is for a uke because the 4 nylon strings subject the soundboard to lower tension than a typical steel strung guitar. Haven't...
