    Elliptical shelves WIP

Not sure what’s happened there, I’ll try to fix it in a bit

    Elliptical shelves WIP

So then I bought some 15mm birch ply and started routing shelves and cutting joints. And this is where I am...

    Elliptical shelves WIP

I had no idea if the maths had worked, so I made a prototype out of cardboard. Then tried it for size in situ.

    Elliptical shelves WIP

Cut the templates out on the bandsaw, then smoothed out the curves by sanding.

    Elliptical shelves WIP

So then it was time for some maths. Ropey line of best fit... Then cut the templates out of 6mm MDF

    Elliptical shelves WIP

I’ve never made anything like this before, so I thought I’d do a bit of a paper mock up of what I wanted. All string and drawing pins at this point.

    Elliptical shelves WIP

Not sure I’ve ever posted anything I’ve made from wood here, I’ve always been too embarrassed by my efforts, so I thought I should break my duck. I need some shelves for my bedroom and this circular unit caught my eye. Except...the space I have isn’t suitable for a circular shape, so I...

    Console build

I really like the look of the finished table. There were a few bits in the making which confused me, like marking out the joints as though you were going to cut them with a handsaw, then cutting them on a table saw. Looks like you adapted the methods you used for cutting tenons as you went...

    Cutting Carbon Fibre sheet

Car wing mirror covers are made from ABS. They are very tough, but much of the strength comes from the curved shape. Car bumpers are made from PP/EPDM copolymer which is very soft and flexible and would be useless in flat sheets as it is too floppy until you get to quite thick panels 4mm up. I...

    Router or not?

I’d agree with the above. A router would leave a chamfer of uniform profile, unlike the toys you wish to emulate. Routers can be very dangerous tools (especially when working on small pieces). If you were looking for a power tool to do this, I would recommend a narrow belt sander. It should be...

    rule breaking

The approach the mods are taking seems reasonable to me. If selling excess stock is habitual and happening from a poster frequently and appears to be part of their business plan, then the post should be removed. If the post is a one off or presents an opportunity to members to buy something...

Opinions on making new cabinates for these speakers?

The shape of the speakers has a big impact on the sound. The rounded edges are there deliberately to improve the tweeter sound and the different depths of the speakers front to back will be because of timing and or phase differences in the crossover circuit. If the aesthetics are bothering you...

    Sanding

When you are sanding you want to remove surface imperfections and then smooth. The lower grits remove material quickly, but leave a rough surface, the higher grits remove material less quickly, but leave a smoother surface. If your piece doesn’t have lumps and bumps, then you can ignore the...

    Food safe finish

Ah, good point. Thankfully not an issue in my house.

    Food safe finish

I use walnut oil on the kitchenware I make. Not super durable, but easy to apply and you can find it in your local supermarket.

    Metric only tape measures

    Haha...I’m a novice at internet pedantry :D

    Metric only tape measures

Just wanted to make a couple of pedantic points (this being the internet and all): 1) “meter” is what you measure things with, “metre” is what you measure things in 2) the speed of light is not constant, the reference is the speed of light in a vacuum. :)
