    Elliptical shelves WIP

Fixing through a false back sounds more straightforward than what I had planned :)

Ply is 15mm, so I don’t think they would work.

    Elliptical shelves WIP

No More Nails! I was thinking of cutting a few of the halving joints deeper and screwing through that into the wall, but I think it will weaken the part too much, so I think I’ll put 4 triangular plates at intersections and screw through that and then put a false back on the section the same...

Ok, all the shaping and sanding done, now I need help. Does anyone have advice about finishing birch ply? I’m looking for two finishes as I am going to make v2 for the bedroom. First will be finished natural, satin or slight sheen (around 20% gloss for those in the know). Second is going to be...

    Assistance needed with bathroom conundrum

You’ll probably find the hex socket in the grub screw is corroded a bit, or full of gunk. Maybe try cleaning with something acidic (vinegar?), or a standard bathroom cleaner and retry the 6mm allen key. As a last resort, you can always fit the key to the socket using a bit of wet and dry to...

Finished chamfering and then used a ROS with 220 grit to smooth the surfaces, now I have to think about finishing. Looking on the shelves, I have a few options. I’d prefer not to spray a coating I think. Not even sure what button polish is or where it came from! Tests are on a scrap piece...

Sold (see how easy that is to do?)

    How much are you asking?

More chamfering... I like the way the outline of the ellipse that will be described on the wall is appearing.

    Assistance needed with bathroom conundrum

Try taking a photo on your phone with a flash? Have you tried an Allen key?

So, more maths required and a new set of templates for the chamfers First one cut, but not easy to see whether it’s right or not until I’ve done both parts of the joint Rather pleased with these results...

Anyone Made Guitars Entirely by Hand?

I’ve made one (r*ckenb*cker copy), using a combination of hand and power tools. http://www.harmonycentral.com/forum/for ... 1/1128796- I had done next to no woodworking at that point and feel like I would do a much better job now. I would love to build a big ugly G*bson O style at some point...

Funny you should say that, but I am planning a set for the blank wall opposite my Hi-Fi for that very reason.

To be honest, I thought the same as you, but it was great. Just took me 15 minutes to do that shelf, and that one needed the most material removing.

And done Spokeshave works brilliantly, really chuffed as it’s my favourite tool. Have to calculate some more ellipses now and then plot some templates to make the marking out easier.

    Elliptical shelves WIP

Yes, I started out like that, I love old school setting out with compasses and the like. Then I realised that I needed to be able to calculate the segments at known intervals along the surface of the 3d shape and at that point I started delving into maths and spreadsheets (which I also like...

    Elliptical shelves WIP

Ha! 3 days, I wish :D Workflow is as follows: Thinking 45% Shifting my tools and bench in and out of the garage 30% Dodging the rain 10% Looking for that tool I’ve lost 10% Doing woodwork 5% So, my original concept was to build in ply and paint the faces and leave the ply exposed as a...

    Elliptical shelves WIP

Thought about that, but I quite like the appearance of the ellipse skeleton emerging through the wall. Almost as if the rest of the egg is on the other side.

    Elliptical shelves WIP

Thanks for all the kind comments and suggestions. I hate dust, much prefer taking wood off in larger lumps, hence the preference for a bladed tool like a block plane or spokeshave over files/rasps/abrasives. Never planed plywood though, so I might have to resort to block and paper. Triangular...

Yes, that’s the thing that’s making my head spin at the moment. Going to explore what happens when a spokeshave meets plywood, I’m not sure that’s going to be a very happy combination. Sanding will be a nightmare...and the steeper joins will be a bit sharp and fragile. Probably better to leave...
