Mystery King **** Tool & Pat Number research

Wow, they must have been giant splitpins to be able to insert a jaw like that into the head of the pin. Thought I'd come across some big ones on earth moving apparatus and old tractors, but even they couldn't have accommodated that thing.

Charnwood W880 Lathe - are theya good 'step up from beginner' lathe

When Great Britain made machines and hand tools and was one of the only sources for most things, largely because there weren't as many importers for such things, or in a minority of cases, those manufacturers didn't have access to the technology. As time passed and foreign companies had bought...

    Small Compressor

Agreed. Talking about the name label is almost irrelevant when the majority of compressors come from the same manufacturer, or from several using the same or similar specifications. Often the only differences are minuscule and not related to performance in any way.

    Workshop Dust extraction

We're about the same at the Acocks Green Men's Shed in Birmingham. I guess that we have a workshop that's barely 30' x 30' and we put the extractor outside too. While heating is a challenge in very cold weather, as you say, once people get working we seldom notice, especially if the tea, coffee...

    Homemade cyclone dust collector collapsing

I had a similar challenge when I installed a cyclone on a 'blue-barrel' using a vacuum from Aldi/Lidl. It was obvious that there was too great a vacuum being generated , although this did not in any way compromise the effectiveness of the cyclone. I constructed and installed a vacuum relief...

    Homemade cyclone extractor.

Hi there. I did almost exactly the same as you and found that what I had believed to be a high-density plastic drum (with a screwed on lid and seal) would be adequate for the purpose. Initially I used my elderly ex-Wickes wet and dry vac. It worked well, leaving around 80% of the material...

    Castors & Rails - Portal/Gantry Crane

Hi, you speak of an engine (etc) hydraulic lifting crane as taking up too much space when not in use. I went this route when I knew I would need to unload and shift a newly purchased (big) lathe and milling machine from the back of a truck and into my purpose-built (small) machine shop. Having...

    Old duffers rebellion.

Thank you so much for your 'No Holds Barred' response to what has largely become OPINION based on little or no factual evidence at all. Please repeat ad-infinitum.

    Securing your workshop

Quite true DBT85. Maybe it's something like 'male jewellery' for them? However, in that case how does one account for the female variety? Rhetorical question. Yes, I'm sure you're right about wanting to own guns! So did I when I was 15, but I grew out of it!

    Securing your workshop

Agreed about not wanting the UK to get anything like the USA. Mind you, not all of the population is quite as mad as those who promote the use of firearms, are they?

    Drill Alu....

Well done! Experimenting often helps, but advice from someone who's done it before is better!

    Securing your workshop

It does rather make you feel that way doesn't it Spectric? Anyone who enters someone's premises (house, garden, garage, shed, workshop) deserves to get a salutary experience with a fit householder encouraging them to leave quickly, or better still being detained until the 999 wallers turn up to...

    Drill Alu....

Hi there. If you're still having difficulty in getting your 2" holes cut into aluminium, then find a local hobby machinist. They'll be able using a milling machine or a lathe to bore those holes in a matter of ticks. If all else fails then contact me with your email address and we can discuss...

    Advertising Standards Authority.

Hi. Yes, in a previous life, before retirement, when I worked in a senior capacity in a national charity, we notified the ASA about a number of inappropriate and/or misleading/untruthful adverts. Although I don't have the proportions available now, they (ASA) will only consider taking action...

    Men In Sheds

Hi fellow shedder. Yes, I've now been closely involved in setting up two sheds and while I'm no expert at woodworking, and never really took to it, I have gradually become more interested in it as a craft. In point of fact, many 'sheds' start their lives by offering simple woodworking to its...

    Securing your workshop

Hello Martin. So sorry to hear of your losses. I would say what I think and feel about such people, but it might offend some if I used the language they deserve. Since we'd been burgled twice within 5 years I bought and installed a full intruder alarm system. It wasn't inexpensive, but since we...

    Entered a parallel universe

Yes, and me. What I wouldn't give for a workshop that big, or even 2/3rds that size. Mine is currently based on a long single garage ( 4 metres by 3) with a 3 metre extension on the end which I built. In there I have a big metalworking lathe, milling machine, mid sized compressor, elderly large...

    Caution - Banggood delivery charge

Thanks pe2dave, you're probably right. The tracking shows its route from one place to another in China, then simply says - "Leaving China!" Then when I challenged them, they sent me an unintelligible list (presumably in Chinese) which was no use whatever. Ah well, back to PayPal to process for a...

    Caution - Banggood delivery charge

I ordered something similar from another of the British/Chinese co-operative ventures in December 2020 and it hasn't arrived yet. Grrrr.
