    CCTV, workshop security

I'm about to install a 4 camera HDD based Reolink system for a client using power over ethernet. I'm not using the cables that came with the kit but good quality cat 6. I'm told they should be good for 100 metres which is twice as far as I need. That removes the need for installing power...

    Power Banks

Thanks for all of the great advice, and sorry for not responding sooner. Last week's storms caused some damage for me and friends which needed some remedial work. The installer who put in the pump system quite sensibly wired all of the pumps and sensors together from the dB, as well as the solar...

    Power Banks

I'm hoping that somebody on the forum will be able to give some informed advice about power banks. My house, in rural France, is heated from a woodburner back boiler and uses 3 normal central heating pumps (Grundfos). One pump takes water from the back boiler to the 800l tank in the cellar...

    Mini Cordless Chainsaw...any good?

As with all chainsaws, the sharpness of the chain determines the ease of cut. I have the Black and Decker pole saw which is only 18v. But with a new or freshly sharpened chain it works really well even at full stretch (so low cutting pressure).

    Mini Cordless Chainsaw...any good?

My new Worx one is due to arrive today from the big river in Germany. It gets good reviews, and was chosen because I already have a couple of Worx batteries. It'll mainly be used for cutting firewood logs to length. There are loads of review videos on YouTube of different models. The main...

Sorry.....I thought it was self explanatory. 😕

    Workbench vice

I once went into an old fashioned hardware shop in my local town (in Norfolk, GB) looking for one of these. I said to the slightly older than middle aged guy behind the counter,"Do you have any vices?" Quick as a flash came the reply, "Well, I sh@g goats". A few seconds silence followed. And...

Car Diagnostic scanners - anybody use them?

Just had a quick look at DiagnoseDan. Looks as if I have a solid day of YouTube binge watching coming up soon.

Car Diagnostic scanners - anybody use them?

I'm being inundated with adverts for the Carly system at the moment after looking at their website. Edd China (he of Wheeler Dealers fame) rates it highly. They seem to have a subscription pricing system which is updated regularly.

Ever wonder how they did computing before computers?

I used to use the Lotus suite of programs. Loved them.

    Cleaning Fireplace Stone

It's very clear to see that the acidic soot has eaten into the stone in places (quite a lot of places), but overall the foaming bbq cleaner seemed to draw out the discoloration very well. If I went over it all again, I might be able to get it a shade or 2 lighter, but life is too short and my...

    Cleaning Fireplace Stone

And for anybody who is interested, the after picture. 5 rolls of kitchen paper, 4 bottles of bbq cleaner, a couple of wire brushes, a sponge, plenty of water, and 3 days of being bent over under the mantlepiece. Not perfect, but as good as it's going to get without serious cost and mess. You can...

    Cleaning Fireplace Stone

Firstly, thanks for all the replies to my post. As requested, here are a couple of pictures of the fireplace back wall. On "Fireplace 1", the left hand side was outside the fire zone. The middle, brownish bit has been given a once over with woodburner glass cleaner (but was like the right hand...

    Cleaning Fireplace Stone

I'm lucky enough to live in a 400 year old stone house in France. When we moved in 5 years ago we installed a woodburner into an existing fireplace/inglenook which was covered with many, many years of burned on soot. This summer's main project is to clean up the stone. I've tried woodburner...

Replacement Dremel collet nut (that isn't a Dremel thread)?

I've used Dremels, mainly cordless, for several years now. Moved to their EZ Speedclick system when they came out for ease of changing discs, but recently the quality has plummeted. I had to cut some old wood screws recently and the centre of every disc spun out after only one cut, meaning it...

    Things that bug you!!

When advertisers say that you can do something "in the comfort of your own home". My home, and I'm sure many others are not particularly comfortable. Equally, there must be quite a few homes that are not your own. Another one is "saving your hard earned cash". My cash was not particularly hard...

    Temperature Monitoring

Thanks for all the input everyone. I'll have a look into it all and make a decision on which way to go. The Sensorpush I'd already looked at, but I need something that will go above 60 degrees

    Temperature Monitoring

I'm trying to set up a system to monitor the temperatures around my central heating system, which is powered by a woodburner. I want to be able to monitor (the temperature of) about 5 points around the system, and as a bonus to be able to see when any of the three water pumps are on or off. An...

Possible to covert cordeless tool to corded?

Look at "The Post Apocolyptic Inventor" on YouTube. He does this all the time and includes links to all the bits needed.
