    Varnish or oil?

Just about to start the finishing process for the grandfather clock I've spent hours on and am agonising on the finish. I tend to be a varnish user considering it to be (generally) harder wearing and a bit more forgiving in application. Have also used danish oil for a few smaller projects and...

    Expansion gap?

After many hours of work just getting ready to put the back on the grandfather clock :D . It's a 'hole' 285 x 1430 and I'm going to to it in T&G mahogany strips about 56 mm (ish) wide. I'm wondering if they should be treated as individual strips or whether I can glue them together as a single...

    Riving knife

Will never, ever use a table saw (again!!) without the riving knife. I view it as an absolutely crucial bit of kit. Crown guard came off a while ago to cut a tenon and I'm afraid I've just never got round to putting it back   I suspect if I don't do it soon I will be visiting...

    Using veneered plywood

Thanks all. Does it matter if I go for ply or MDF? I have absolutely no experience in this area at all. Cost of course is an issue (isn't it always?!). Scrit, - I was intending to use pre veneered sheets and apply a solid wood lipping (say 12mm or so). If I'm careful are you saying I can get...

    Using veneered plywood

I'm about to consider what to me is the heresy of using veneered plywood, - mahogany in particular. Don't ask why, - it's just to me solid wood is the 'proper' way to dot it!! However, - costs and availability dictate I consider it's use. I can't believe you can get the same finish as with...

    Mixing mahogany & sapele

Having spent a chunk of today measuring and working out what I've got I find myself shorter of mahogany than I first thought. I'm therefore going to reconsider what I use for the clock. May even use parana pine as I actually like it a lot and it's great to work with. I'll just have to think...

    Mixing mahogany & sapele

Right, - so it's back to looking for mahogany look-a-like!! Anything else remotely similar (but also cheap )?

    Mixing mahogany & sapele

Thanks Chaps, I suppose I could always buy  some additional mahogany just to finish off. I just wanted to see if I could save a few quid on the way!! Stuart

    Mixing mahogany & sapele

Next project to start soon, - long case clock  I was hoping to use all my 'recycled' mahogany but now realise I haven't got enough. I'd like to use what I've got (cheapskate? - me?) and wonder if mixing in some sapele would work? Anyone know if this will work or not? I will have to...

    24hrs and not a word?

Got mine!! Anyone else noticed they've moved away from keeping it to an 'annual' catalogue? Now only valid until Feb '07 so I suppose some price increases early next year?

    Clock plans & movements

Blimey!! You think I'm clever or something?! Fantastic workmanship and way above my skill level. I was thinking more along the lines of 6 inch nail fixings!!

    Clock plans & movements

SWMBO was actually inspired by Norm making one of his shaker wall clocks and has asked if I'd make something similar. Looking for directions to sites for movements and plans? A quick Google hasn't thrown up an awful lot. I'd prefer a 'mechanical' movement (with pendulum) rather than quartz but...

Dado cutters - Please, what is so dangerous about them

Gary, Without wishing to be a pedant that's not strictly true. So far as is reasonably practicable implies a judgement of risk versus cost. If the risk is disproportionate to the cost of eliminating or reducing then it may be acceptable to continue. If the risk is high (e.g. fatality or serious...

    Kity 419 rise and fall

Thanks for the responses, - I suspected it was dust build up. So, - sort of stupid question. I've got all the extension tables etc. bolted on and don't want to disturb the set up if I can help it (lazy git!!). What's the best way to access the rise and fall mechanism or is it impossible without...

    Kity 419 rise and fall

Had the Kity for about a year now and very pleased with it. However, the blade rise and fall is becoming stiff to operate and I wonder if there's anything I can do before going back to the supplier (NMA)? Don't want to get to the stage of forcing anything and breaking bits!! Any help...

To wax or not to wax???

No, - not me legs!! Just finishing a box with Danish oil. After about 8 coats it's looking rather good and wondering if waxing will make a lot of difference? Heard that applied with fine wire wool it helps build up that sheen that just makes it look that little bit better. Any opinions?

    Finishing inlaid work

I'm about to start finishing a teak box with some ash inlay. The teak needs a coat of stain just to even out the colour before oiling. However, I want to make sure the ash doesn't get discoloured so won't be fixing that until the teak has been stained/oiled. Question is - how do I prevent the...

    Router extension collets:

I've used the CMT one in a router table. Did what I wanted (i.e. gave me the extra height) but have to admit it was still a right **** to change bits. Two spanners, grazed knuckles and lots of swearing!! But now I'm a Triton owner I dont have that problem 8) 8)

    A Couple of NYW questions

How appropriate - just finished grouting the bathroom tiles whilst listening to some JT. Too old to rock and roll so I do woodwork instead :D :D

    Axminster Router

You do 'get what you pay for' but I've had two of the Axminster 1/2 inch and they've both done sterling work. One was basically thrashed to death in a router table and the other has done several worktops so if you're looking for a budget router I reckon they're OK.
