Saw a motorcycle get lifted today

What self respecting tea leaf would nick a Harley? They generally only steal proper bikes! :D

Saw a motorcycle get lifted today

And they'll get a smack on the wrist and told not to be such naughty boys again (and again, and again). Good for you for doing what you did.

    Mobile Bases

http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-un ... ase-100253 At £60 it's a bit expensive but I've got my 270 kg table saw on one and it's been bullet proof. True it doesn't get a lot of movement but it is solid and easy to move/lock. I had a Rutlands one years ago and it was absolute carp, nightmare...

    Breakfast bar fitting advice.

I would have thought that if your going to fix at both ends a 2 metre long worktop, even at 40 mm thick, will eventually show a degree of sag in the middle. Might take a while but gravity tends to get its way over time. Can you 'cheat' a bit and position the legs further inboard to reduce the...

G-Tech or Dyson or other cordless vacs...

We have a dyson (not sure what model, - animal?) and it's so good we got rid of the mains powered vac. Never use the turbo and the pick up is great including their hair.

    Smoke alarm

There's a difference between a smoke alarm 'going off' and the low battery 'chirp' (usually at 3 o'clock in the morning!). Which is it? If it's chirping then a battery change should do the trick. If it's going into full alarm at the same time every night then clearly something is wrong. Like...

Indeed! :D Nice design Phil, - I quite like that.

    Recording TV

Interesting range of views. We want a PVR so we are in control of what we do and when we want to do it. Something of a hangover from the old days when there were many fewer TV options. Anyhow, - our choice. We will probably see how we get on with nothing for a while. Having been with Sky for so...

    Recording TV

Very funny! Sky are the spawn of the devil and they can shove their box and their extortionate monthy subscription where the sun doesn’t shine. Been with them for years and they will offer new customers fancy gifts and they wouldn’t even upgrade our old box. In any case retirement means a...

    Pin Hinge Box

I was asked in the 'Post a photo of the last thing you made' thread to provide more detail relating to the boxes. Here it is. Firstly, I'm no designer so these are not my original design. If you want more detail see 'Box Making Basics' by David M Freedman (ISBN 1-56158-123-2), it's been...

    Recording TV

We're about to move away from Sky and we'll be losing the ability to record programmes. I've seen PVR's but know very little about them. Definitely want the option to watch one while recording another which apparently isn't common on some. Not looking to spend a fortune but wondered if anyone...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I've been nagged by the MIL for quite some time to make her a box so with her 80th approaching I thought I'd make her a couple. L to R: Sycamore (from their garden) and Iroko, Rosewood (reclaimed) and burr oak, sycamore and american black walnut. The wife has dibs on the rosewood/oak but the...

Notes on YANDLES (TIMBER ONLY) @MARTOCK

Are they hobby friendly? - very much so. Can you self-select or is it by appointment? - quite a wide range of self selection timber. If you are looking for something a bit more complex or out of the ordinary then they are usually helpful over the phone. Will they deliver? - don't know but I...

    Identification challenge...

First thing I thought of when I saw the picture. Not 100% certain but I can still feel the pain of the dislocated thumb!

    Smart meters, Pros & Cons?

Then on that basis Roger we'd better halt all technology immediately as something could go wrong! I know that's not what you mean but it is a somewhat logical extension of that particular argument is it not? I might well get 'caught out' at some point in time but in the grand scheme of life...

    Smart meters, Pros & Cons?

Which is really the object of the exercise! (same here by the way). I do struggle to understand some of the paranoia that appears on this forum whenever smart meters are mentioned.

    Shelving Joint?

Ohh, - I like that! Bit of metal rod and some epoxy and jobs a good 'un. That's a very practicable, simple solution that allows me to keep to the original design dimensions which whilst not uber critical were something I didn't want to increase. That said I'm going to look at thicker timber...

    Shelving Joint?

Thanks for the useful comments. If I change to full width horizontals my concern is the lack of ‘meat’ for any housing although it will help with the more economical use of available timber! With 15 mm stock I can’t see how I can go deeper than 5 mm and retain strength? That really doesn’t feel...

    Shelving Joint?

I've been tasked with making a set of display shelves for my main client. These are a decent size (300 mm square 'boxes' 200 mm deep) and will be 15 mm thick oak. My initial thought was to use a slot joint (to my shame don't know what they're actually called!) Accuracy is clearly important...

Leveling a concreate slab for a shed

I was thinking folding wedges but the slate and cement approach is probably a better one. Would also be a fairly easy way of levelling a bearer. Set the two ends level and when its gone off use as many intermediate points as you want and simply bed the bearer on them to level all.
