    Box Dimensions

+1 for 12mm sides - makes it easy to construct ply panels when veneering! Just remember to check the depth of your preferred hinges however - it is soul destroying to make a 12mm box and then find your hinges are 15mm deep (DAMHIKT!) Steve

    Workshop Essentials Rip Fence

From your photo of it on the saw it doesn't look parallel to the red insert plate - do you have a micro adjust or is this just a photographic illusion? Steve

Plywood grade with knots, figuring etc

What you are after, as you correctly surmise, is what everyone else tries to avoid! Drop into your local DIY shed - they have stacks of 'interesting quality' plywood, although they try and sell it as better than that ;) You can then go through the stack to find what you want. Other options since...

Aspalls Cider versus Crabbies Alcoholic Ginger Beer etc

Just out of interest - what is it that alcohol actually does to you guys to make you like it? Is it simply the taste, or the effects of the alcohol has, and if so what effect is it that gives you so much pleasure? I refer to the 'cold beer after a hard days work' rather than 15 pints and a curry...

    eBay fees going UP again!

What does a standard auction cost? One where people turn up and bid? Must be 15% at least. Most of these seem to have web bidding as well now - I presume the same fees apply. E-bay is not significantly different in terms of its prices to these are they? Steve

    Axminster customer reviews

In what way were they useless Froggy? I have 3 of those clamps, bought as a set several years ago. They have been fine for light clamping duty, which is what they are specified as being for. They are never going to pull in warped timber etc, but for holding cabinets together while putting...

    Bandsaw - ribbed belt replacement

Thanks Chaps - circlip pliers it is! Lets hope I don't need a puller as well, I don't have one of those either!

    Bandsaw - ribbed belt replacement

Thanks - I have the manual but it doesn't cover belt replacement, only altering the ratio for different speeds, which doesn't require removing the belt. Steve

    parquet / block flooring

'Elf and Safety mate - just because of a few carcinogens in liquid bitumen..... spoilsports!

    Bandsaw - ribbed belt replacement

I have a BAS316 bandsaw in which the ribbed belt has split and perished. Got a new one OK but ho do I fit it? I presume I have to remove the lower wheel as the ribbed belt is behind the wheel. I have undone the four bolts holding the wheel at the back and given it a gentle bit of persuasion with...

    parquet / block flooring

Thanks nolegs. I really don't want to go down the hot air paint stripper route - doing paint is bad enough but hot tar is going to be a real bugger to scrape! I like the belt sander idea, might give that a go.... Steve

    parquet / block flooring

Thanks chaps - plenty of food for thought there. I will attempt a couple of methods and see what works best for the blocks I have. Steve

    parquet / block flooring

Thanks Mick. Big area! How much of an expansion gap are you leaving round the edge? It will not be possible to lift my skirting so will need to cover any gap with a moulding, I am trying to decide how big I need to make it! Steve

    parquet / block flooring

Thanks Hanser - tell me about it - just moving the blocks made me black yesterday. I will be doing it at the bottom of the garden I suspect but dust mask still a pre-requisite. Pete - possibly! My googling suggests a range of options from 'no glue sticks to bitumen, scrape it off' to some glues...

    worth shopping around for plywood

It would pay to check the grain direction on the cut pieces and make sure they all flow the way you think they should - you might find the cheaper quote/fewer boards have a random grain direction as they tried to minimise waste rather than paid attention to aesthetics! Steve

    parquet / block flooring

OK, so SWMBO was desperate for this in our hall and dining room, and a deal too good to miss on e-bay came up so an impulse purchase was made - I am now the owner of approx 50m2 of Teak (as it was advertised, although I think it is Iroko) block flooring. Usual situation of being lifted from a...

    No Elf & Safety ?

Looks stupid and dangerous. However.... if you zoom in, he does appear to be roped to the tree (see the rope dangling by the trunk). The dozer is not going anywhere and is less likely to move than the feet simply planted on the ground. If the upper ladder is roped at the top and the bottom rung...
