Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

I have fitted those tiles before as well - Ray has made a lovely job of that roof! Steve

using sheet versus timber for desk top

As a beginner, I would advise veneered ply or mdf and to dress the edges with solid timber. As stated above, solid timber can take a lot more effort and satisfaction is not guaranteed. Use of Ply/mdf also avoids considering movement due to moisture content. There is some surprisingly high end...

    Everyone Vote in Scotland Independance

Scotland doesn't currently have the ability to fully set it's own tax rates, particularly business and corporate tax rates. If it wanted to attract investment by lowering corporation tax (as Ireland did some years ago, albeit with dire consequences!) then it could only do so as an independent...

    Hopping mad

Quick tip (no pun intended) - stuff like plasterboard can easily be broken up and put in bags for general waste. Our local tip has a skip for non-recyclable stuff. It used to take plasterboard but now insist we drive 40 miles to the nearest facility that will take it. Thus everyone just bags...

    Roof timber sizing

Short answer - no! I was (am, eventually!) looking to build a carport with polycarbonate sheets on the roof with a span of 3m. It will be slightly sloped (5-10 degrees) to allow the rain etc to run to guttering. I looked at 2x4 and was advised they would sag too badly and to go for 2x6 minimum...

    Bespoke Joinery/Cabinet Making items

Says it is due to retirement on the auction, so no need to feel too bad about grabbing something. No nice timber however. A couple of festool items, big panel saw but apart from that unless you are very local then not a lot of interest. Steve

    Wickes... Toolstation?

Yup, Huntingdon Wickes has a toolstation counter in it. Across the road is a Screwfix, 300 yds up the road is a small B&Q and 50 yds down the road is a TP ;) I find Screwfix tend to be cheapest of the lot, B&Q quite expensive and TP just take the p*ss with their prices - they are always the last...

    Applying veneer

The sides look a bit uneven for veneering - you need a dead flat surface of the veneer will not adhere properly. Never used self adhesive veneer sheets, but I would try a test area without priming first - if the adhesive is already stuck to the sheet as a 'film' it is unlikely to soak into the...

Best way to felt a shed roof?

+1 for EPDM, but don't use contact adhesive unless you have plenty of hands to help. I did, and my father didn't quite grasp the true meaning of the contact part of contact adhesive - half my shed roof now looks more wrinkled than an elephants scrotum

LA plane for shooting - secondary bevel or not?

Many thanks for the advice, much appreciated. Since it works as is I will continue with the honed 25 degree single bevel. Have to say, it really is a super plane! Steve

Frog Adjustment Screw for adjusting nut - left hand thread

Any cheap planes on e-bay you could buy and use the screw from? EDIT - ignore me, just re-read your post  Steve

LA plane for shooting - secondary bevel or not?

I have finally got round to making a shooting board after ordering a LA Jack. This is the QuangSheng plane from WH so comes with 3 blades - 25, 38 and 50 degrees, with the 25 recommended for shooting. Do you chaps put a secondary bevel on the 25 degree blade for shooting and if so what angle do...

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Keep going Steve - this thread is an inspiration. You will have good days as well as bad days, and if it takes a little longer then it takes a little longer. The end result will be worth it! Steve

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Yes, it is larger than we originally intended. You can see the position of the 2 steels forming a 'T' in the last photo. there were two small kitchen rooms (kitchen and utility) and a downstairs toilet and washing machine area - we were originally going to just convert the two rooms and leave...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Have been very busy putting sorting out a new kitchen - not really woodwork as it came from Wickes flat packed, but I did make the shelf above the cooker! I also uncovered the back door that was hidden, stripped it down, replaced the top two panels for glass units and refurbished the lock - it...

    Exterior caulk

Geocell painters mate is about the best I have used. Not too runny and over paintable in an hour. Doesn't seem to shrink as much as the cheaper 'no nonsense' type stuff does either, which is the major problem with caulk - especially in anything over a couple of mm wide. It is available from...

Steve's doors - open inwards or outwards !

Outwards - inward opening doors take up a lot of space, a commodity that is always in short supply no matter how big you think your workshop is! Also, if your doors open outwards and you bar them across the back (ie the inside), you have to force them in against the bar and the hinges. If they...

Many thanks both - I will consider ordering one and replacing the bar as suggested. Steve

Mitre gauge - bar depth (V27)

I have been eyeing up a mitre gauge for a while now, with most seeming to fit a standard 19mm x 9mm slot (3/4" x 3/8"). As I have an old Startrite TS I figured I would have no problem, but before pressing the order button thought I had better just check the slot dimensions. width - 19mm - check...
