Soundproofing a room with a noisy scroll saw!!

Why is it noisy? It shouldn't be in normal operation. Certainly not to the extent that you need ear protection. Check the saw itself is not vibrating against your table top, and check your table is not vibrating. Easiest way is to set the saw going then lift it up off the table - is it still...

Things that give you an irrational amount of rage

Estate agents People that view your house with absolutely no intention of buying it, but want a good look round anyway Estate agents fees - you want to charge me £5k for taking a few photos and hosting them on a website - sure, great value, where do I sign? The mounting trend of linking...

£5000? How to get a good return?

It denends on how mush risk your friend wants to take regarding getting back less than she invested. If she wants a safe investment then returns will be smaller but secure. 2% return is not bad - you get it for doing nothing after all! If you want instant access to your cash and a safe...

    Tennis / Tour de France

Yup - Wiggins did a fantastic ride to not only beat Evans, but also Cancellara. Chapeau!

    Tennis / Tour de France

I think Sky are stronger than BMC as a team, but that Cadel possibly has the edge over Wiggins as a climber and a descender. Wiggins has the advantage of being a much better time triallist. If Wiggins can take a minute out of Cadel today all he has to do for the rest of the tour is stick with...

    Higgs Boson

I do hope there is some irony in this thread, otherwise there is certainly a clear lack of understanding of scientific endeavour! Why must we measure the importance of everything in terms of the money it costs to attain it? Do you look at your wife and wonder why you love her so much, or do you...

    Timber grading

Think of it as sorting out the rubbish and putting it in a pile called V's. The good stuff is what's left but not sorted beyond taking out the dross - hence unsorted. Steve

    Why is it cutting lopsided??

This effect is somewhat common in thicker timber and can be caused by a number of mechanisms which give the same effect. The two principle mechanisms are a non square table, or pushing the wood too fast through the cut. Think of it this way - when you cut, you move the timber in line with what...

Cement "fillet" for new pre-fab garage

Yup, you can get ready-mix from any DIY shed. MAke sure you get the right product though. It comes in 25kg bags, some come mixed and some come with a sperate bag of cement inside to mix in - the former is easier and quicker. Seal afterwards, then you can seal over the fillet as well.

    Fuel crisis

Nobody benefits - people are not using more over the next 2-3 weeks, they are just filling up now instead of later. Same amount gets used in the long term so no advantage in terms of duty.

    Fuel crisis

Just to put the otherside of the equation forward: We all remember the problems with the last fuel strike. The governement have said people should CONSIDER keeping their tanks full and given due warning of POTENTIAL problems. This includes making contingency plans such training relief drivers...

    Idiots?

I ride daily into London and back again from Kent. Hi-viz is fine, but its best use is in the dark when the reflective strips work, not for the day-glow yellow in daytime. I do wear one, but after 5 days its so filthy that the yellow is faded anyway. As to accident rates - yes, most are...

    MIT online electronics course

Looks interesting, although I presume the business model is to bundle it with paying courses leading to higher qualifications at a later date - kind of like the OU does? Not sure about the requirements though, been a while since I did algebra and differential equations! In order to succeed in...

    Quantative easing

When a bank takes in money from savers (corporate and private, including pension funds) it doesn't stick it in a vault under the floor, it lends it out in the form of loans or buys assets with it. In some banks it also uses it to effectively play the stock market. This includes buying bonds...
