    Common rafter work out

The more I'm reading it does seem that maybe it is because I went over a 1/3 of the timber. I will use a sliding bevel to as maybe the framing square was off slightly. I'm lacking a sheet of OSB or MDF but I have a few bits of svrap laying around so will try the cut on that. Cheers Mark

    Common rafter work out

I was using a framing square todo it. Using the points of 248 and 300. I am thinking I will change this and use a sliding bevel. Maybe it will be a bit more accurate for me with that. Am I right in saying that the angles I need to put on are: For the rafter to the ridge plate the angle is...

    Common rafter work out

hi rod, and issue i have is that my measurements are different for the left side of the roof (when you looking at it) as it has a shallower pitch. So I am dealing with 2 different pitches. I did find this walk through that seems like it can help...

    Common rafter work out

Hi all, Today I was doing the roof on my porch, well trying to and then getting massively frustrated as I followed this walk though http://www.thisiscarpentry.com/2012/11/09/common-rafter-framing/ and cut one of the rafters, offered it up and the top of the rafter sat above the top of the ridge...

    Another gate

I think it is more a visual thing really, as you say the majority are usually just flush with the rails. I suppose it could account for shrinkage in the timber but I think it is more of a visual thing. But then again in this gate the t and g boards may be a little thin to fit the brace to them...

    Another gate

Hi Shuggy, The diagonal bracing helps prevent sag and moves the load back across to the hinge side. As you can see it makes a number of triangles. Looking at the back picture the hinges would be hung on the the right side of the gate. Cheers Mark

    Car port plans?

Hey Rodders, Is a pole plate the same thing as a ledger board? is it a case that a ledger board is an Americanism or does it specify something different? Cheers Mark

    Car port plans?

oh right ok. Whats the span that it will be going over. I would personally go with a ledger board bolted to the house wall and joist hangers to construct the roof. EDIT. or with the ledger board you could cut the joists to the angle wanted for the pitch and just nail that into the ledger board...

Hi Graham, I have, a couple of windows in place, just leaving the wrap on until I get the frame made for them. so it keeps it drier inside. Well the planning portal said as long as it is not over 3msq measured externally and as the house is not near a public highway the 2m away from boundary...

Permitted dev, difference between rear and side extension

Hi Trig, from what I remember when doing some reading on this for it to be considered a rear extension it needs to be behind the house as of how it looked from 1948 (that is the original house so any extensions that were done since are not the back of the house and it goes by the original plans...

    Timber Porch Build W.I.P

Day 15 and Day 16 Day 15 So today I wanted to get the rest of the frame up and plumbed up so it was ready for the house wrap and a tarp over the roof to help protect it from the rain which had been talked about to start today (and it did, glad I covered it) I cut and installed the needed studs...
