    Lots of hot air

I think that's a good point. I spent my working life as an academic scientist and in my experience scientists are pretty voracious when an anomaly appears - wow, I want a chunk of that. I might be made a Professor... The world of academic science really isn't some sort of stitch-up trying to...

    Jacobs 2A taper.

Thanks for letting us know how it worked out. I often make internet searches for answers to my own questions and light on forums where the same question has been asked but conflicting answers are given - then it goes silent, and I never know which one (if any of them) actually worked. Always...

    Reduction gear for headstock?

I too have been following this thread from an engineering perspective. I work mostly with metal but sometimes turn plastics and even (shock horror!) wood on a metalworking lathe. Graham - unless you need to reduce your minimum spindle speed for other reasons, this is not the way to go. 450 rpm...

    Possible help with lathe?

Hi Oliver. Have you made any progress with sorting this out? It seems pretty mysterious. From your picture there is nothing wrong with the change wheel setup. The only thing we can't see in the pic is the gear on the drive shaft, which is presumably correct and is not intended to be changed...

    Jacobs 2A taper.

Just luck! I have a dim memory of seeing this issue before and searched on 'Jacobs 6A-2A chuck' rather than looking for a 2A taper. Looking at the Wikipedia article on machine tapers it seems that even if your chuck wants JT2S, JT2 would fit fine - it's the same angle and the diameter at the...

    Jacobs 2A taper.

It seems that Jacobs made a model 6A-2A chuck and the 'Taper' after the 2A is just to distinguish from the screwed version. There is an (obsolete) listing for a 6A-2A here in which it is stated that the taper is actually JT2. Rob.

HELP WITH IDENTIFY METAL OILER - ENGLAND

I don't know either, but suggest you try the forum at Model Engineer - there are people on there with an interest in UK engineering history. Rob

    Metal lathe chuck help!

If I've understood your post correctly, the thing you are after is called a back plate, something like this. Bob.

Making a homemade forge, does anyone have any reccomendations for a suitable blowtorch?

Rick, when you say the torch isn't up to it 'despite being rated to be' I wonder if you are talking about temperature or power - elsewhere you say the the Bernzomatic torch is good for 2400 C, which makes me think perhaps temperature is what you're going by. But it's power that is more important...

    Kity 419 tablesaw tilt mechanism.

I now have a second example of one of these criminally badly designed handwheels in my workshop, courtesy of Adam. It seems that at some time in the production history of these machines Kity changed between 12 and 13 tooth mod 2 - I'm sure that the one I did for Mock was 12T, and the plastic...

Need help choosing a non-gas welder for 6mm steel

Having used only cheapo 'buzz-box' (transformer) stick welders before, I went for a Parweld Xti 160A inverter a couple of years ago. Night and day compared with the old buzz boxes - much friendlier for an occasional and inexpert welder like me. The latest version can be had for £176.50 from...

    Sieg SC4 variant tailstock.

Hi Munty. As no-one has picked up on this I'll bung in my two pennies' worth, with the caveat that I'm not a trained engineer. I was however thinking about a related problem recently and made some calculations. The result was that in this scenario (ie tailstock high by delta_h, but tool cutting...

files to make round holes square

I really wouldn't bother with the Draper files - they're cheap for a reason. They do cut (just), but the teeth aren't so sharp as Vallorbes - and sharp is what you need for cutting aluminium. The Drapers will clog very quickly and drive you mad. A mid-range alternative might be the Tomé Feteira...

    Sold Mixed brass swarf

A while back a forum member asked me if I had any brass turnings for making resin/metal inlays in wood. So now I keep the stuff when I turn brass. Latest project has yielded about 300g of mixed swarf: If it's of any use to anyone I'll bung it in the post. Bob.

    Sold Pen making stuff.

After good initial contact, KingAether has gone silent on this. If anyone else is interested, the stuff is still available. The bits weigh in total about 1.1kg, so postage would be £4.80 2nd class RM according to the RM website. Rob

    phosphor bronze...where?

That is a little pricey, but not insanely so - for comparison I recently paid £48 inc VAT for a 200mm long piece of 3" x 1/4 " PB102 from my local supplier, which translates to about £26 for the size you're after. Unfortunately they don't stock 2" though! But that could well be cheap - they base...

    Sold Pen making stuff.

Having a bit of a clear out I found some pen-making things: There's 3 acrylic blanks, 4 laminated dyed wood, 7 half-inch and 3 three-quarter inch rosewood (I think) blanks in there, some kits (can't guarantee the ink won't have dried out), some inserts, some lace bobbins.... Maybe worthwhile...
