    Cowells 90ME Lathe

Yorkie, I think you may well regret it if you sell, they are indeed lovely little machines. I'd keep it! If you do want to sell though, you could try lathes.co.uk - I've not sold through them myself, but the guy who runs the site (Tony Griffiths) is very knowledgable and I believe he is willing...

    Polishing Brass

MCB, if you can't get a good finish with Brasso and a rag then you need to go back a step (or several) and make sure you've got all the dings/scuffs/scratches out with abrasive paper or whatever - as others have said, somewhere in the region of 2000-2500 grit is necessary before you go on to a...

    Handedness of circular saws

Thanks for all your replies - seems it's a bit of a mystery. Having tried various contortions holding the trigger handle in my right hand I've found it surprisingly easy just to give in use the machine left-handed - I prefer to have blade on the side away from my body, apart from the awkwardness...

    Handedness of circular saws

I have just bought a Bosch cordless circular saw. When I picked it up, it took a few moments (after a vague feeling of 'there's summat wrong with this), for the realisation that the blade was on the 'wrong' side of the motor/handle to dawn on me  . At first I thought I'd blundered and...

    Vices

Ah, thanks, quick read and looks like same vice (screw cover, square nose) and same question as the OP on that thread. So probably shall never know - just idle curiosity. Important thing is that it's rock solid, and now cleaned up and oiled runs silky smooth however old it is. Regards, Robin.

    Vices

Thanks, I shall try to get hold of some 5/16 BSW then, no idea why pic doesn't show (it was a link to photobucket - bviously I blundered somewhere). Not essential anyway, mainly to show alarmingly bent tommy bar! R.

    Vices

Well, I picked up the 53E today: I was a bit alarmed by the bent tommy bar (why!?) especially in view of the comment above about the half-nut mechanism being liable to fail, but I stripped it down and all appears absolutely fine. It's a beefy thing! Just one more thing though.... The holes...

    Vices

Thanks for responses chaps. On the basis of which I'm giving the 7" a miss and have offered to buy a 53E going near me on Gumtree for 55 quid, seems reasonable given it's a beast of a vice, if I'm too late I'll keep looking. Quick release , no dog, but doubt that's a problem given the capacity...

    Vices

Of the clamping variety. I'm in the process of building my first 'proper' woodworking bench (it'll be a be a 2x4 laminated job, sort of hybrid of the many plans out there) and I'm wondering about suitable vice(s). I'm told from a reliable source that I shall bitterly regret it if I don't go for...

    Yet another 'which router' question.

Thanks for the pointer to the Makita at Costco Damo, seems like a bargain at 250, Screwfix want 380 for what looks like the same thing. No mention of above-table height adjustment though - having struggled adjusting height with a standard plunge router in a lash-up table before, I really want...

    Yet another 'which router' question.

Thanks for replies. Seems that concensus is bigger= better for a dedicated table mounted machine, so I shall go with the 2kW model, looks like there's only 30 quid difference in price, so ships and ha'p'worths of tar I guess. Had a look at the Trend, but quite a big price jump - I imagine the...

    Yet another 'which router' question.

I'm sure this has been asked a million times before, but a search on this site hasn't yet answered my specific question. I'm looking to buy a router for permanent mounting in a table (which I haven't er.. quite made yet, but that's another topic...). I'm looking at the Triton offerings which...

Router Collets - now SUCCESS! (+ UKW tribute)

In fact ER series collets have only been around since the early 1970's - I guess woodworking routers antedate that by some margin! I too have wondered why routers haven't adopted the system, which is far more versatile than the fixed size collets. I suppose it's just inertia - it's always been...

    Tungsten Carbide Blanks?

Paul, I know nothing about egg carving, but having had a look on Google, it does look interesting! Like others I wonder if you really need carbide tooling assuming that what you are aiming to make are hand gravers. Personally I'd get some tool steel (silver steel) or gauge plate which is...

router collet extender = lathe extender?

Rafezetter - No logical reason as far as I can see. I have an Axi router extender, cost me about 35 quid I think, - it's just an ER 20 engineering collet chuck on a 12.7mm parallel stick. Arc Euro do an ER16 collet holder on a 12mm parallel shaft, but ER16 only goes up to 10mm collets, so OK for...

Mild Steel Tube for Upgrading Pillar Drill

Another possibility might be to make a riser - turn down a bit of say 1 and 7/8 inch bar to 46mm, then turn a smaller diameter length at one end to slip inside the existing column. Even replacing the entire existing column with say 18" length solid steel would only be 15 quid tops for material...

    Small morticer advice

Many thanks for all your comments - exactly the kind of advice I was hoping for. Concensus seems to be that these little things aren't really rigid enough for what I want to do. I have space enough in my dungeon workshop for a floor-mounted machine and the floor is solid enough, so I'll be...

    Rutlands Sale for Planer Thicknesser - 204mm x 120mm

I have the Axminster badged version (now discontinued) - I think I paid about 230 for it. Like Jake I find it does the job, but the din is terrible - it has a brush motor. The first one I had from Axminster had a table misalignment problem (infeed and outfeed making a shallow V towards the...

    RandA Spindle thread

Get a thread pitch gauge? Machine Mart do them, or google will reveal numerous internet suppliers. Not expensive - drop in the ocean compared to what you're going to spend on the new toy! Happy machining, Regards, Robin
