    Pen making

Proops do a MT1 male - MT2 female adaptor for about a tenner if you have space between centres to accommodate and the economics work. Proops Adaptor Rob

    Best Lathe Metal Turning Tools.

As Rorschach says, more info needed - it would be helpful to know what tools you are using, on what machine, with what materials and (most importantly) what problems you are experiencing with the tools you have. The only truly 'bad' turning tools I've used are the ubiquitous cheap brazed...

    knives!!!

Hi Joe.There are some makers on the British Blades forum - might be worth a look/ask there. There are many US based knife forums, but they can be a bit - well, slashy and stabby. My own experiments with knife making (by stock removal) were with gauge plate (aka ground flat stock or O1). I found...

    Microwaving dry wood.

My apologies to Jiajun Fan if she is reading this. In my defence I looked up the name Jiajun on Nameswiki before posting because I didn't want to fall into that all-too-common folly of assuming that microwaving wood was an exclusively male preserve, and read that Jiajun was 100% male as a...

    Microwaving dry wood.

The porridge problem is indeed tricky Eric, and quite possibly unsolvable. I had been thinking to suggest that measuring the temperatures of the two bowls when they emerged from the microwave might be a way forward - all other things being equal, your wife's bowl, having a smaller amount of...

    Home made saw bench.

Thanks for the pics of your Sealy Col, and for your further thoughts about fixing the Axi. I'll attach a couple of pictures below. Seeing your picture of the vice on the Sealy reminded me that I have a big old milling vice gathering dust somewhere. As it looks like both the existing moving and...

    Home made saw bench.

Thanks for your replies to my questions about sheet steel and bandsaws Col. You have confirmed my suspicion that rolled steel plate is not entirely flat - but good enough is good enough! The Axi bandsaw isn't well designed. There is no provision for up-down alignment and the bottom of the vice...

    Brazing flux

If hot water doesn't work, try a caustic soda solution - I think the pink stuff is mainly boric acid. Not sure though, but it's worked for me with stubborn high temperature fluxes. Rob.

    Home made saw bench.

Well, you're my kind of dinosaur Col ! Thanks for posting your build - that's one heck of a machine! Quite inspirational. Couple of questions - is the table just bog-standard MS cold-rolled plate as can be had from any steel stockholder? I have a plan for a machine, but wondered about how flat...

    Repairing old pine planks

Thanks Andy, hadn't thought of a backing piece  . That's what I'll do. I won't be able to get as good a fit for the patch as I could by boring/turning a plug, but it'll still be less incongruous than a 2.5in dia round patch. Rob

    Repairing old pine planks

I've (perhaps unwisely) ripped up the plywood cladding from my bathroom floor to reveal the original boards. They're about 10 inches wide by 3/4 thick. Many are quite worm eaten from the top, but will be ok if flipped - some bits are beyond redemption though. I went to a salvage yard and they...

    L6 steel UK supplier

Have you talked to any suppliers? I buy general purpose steel from industrial stockholders - had always assumed they wouldn't deal in small quantities, but they do, subject to a minimum order in the region £20-50. I'd imagine L6, being a rather specialist toolsteel, would be traded in relatively...

Do I need two drill presses?

I think that this question has probably been answered (no!), but for what it's worth I have two - a Fobco Star and a Jet floor standing job. My idea was the same as the OP's, one for metal (Fobco) other for wood. In practice the Jet gets used only on the rare occasions I have something too big...

How long should a bandsaw blade last?

By one of those coincidences which happen more often than they ought, I logged on to the site tonight to ask almost exactly the same question as the OP. In my case the (Tuffsaws) 3/8 x 3pi blade, on a Record 350S went bang when slicing up some 5mm plywood for kindling. OK, I know about the 3...

    Waterproof gloss

Thanks for replies, and apologies for tardy response. The handle was hand-shaped and I was looking for a high gloss 'encased' look - it doesn't matter too much to the client, but I use projects like this to experiment with finishes. I ended up using yacht varnish, which was OK -ish. I work...

    Waterproof gloss

Most of my (few ) woodwork projects get finished with oil, or if I want it shiny, shellac. I'm making a handle for an embossing wheel for a potter now, and in my mind's eye it is glossy. Wet environment, so shellac's no good. Is there anything which gives a similar finish and is water...

Looking for help with a project

If this isn't sorted yet, I could do the turning to make something like Nev's second link. I'd need a wood person to advise on a source of walnut though. Email me if you're interested Steven. Rob.

    Welder for a relative novice

If it's stick you're after, Parweld might be worth a look - I bought a Parweld 160 amp inverter from weldequip for just under £200 about a year ago and it's been fine - handles up to 4mm electrodes without a problem and much more forgiving (and lighter) than the old transformer based boxes. Does...

Lathe tooling - worth a punt

Simon, I was in a similar situation some years ago when I took up metal-mangling. The old hands always advise grinding your own tools, and they're right - but it's not that easy if you haven't got anything but YouTube and diagrams to go on. I suspect that if you go for the cheap insert tooling...

    Joining aluminium tube.

Presumably you're looking to save money by making the joining pieces yourself. If so it depends on how the economics stack up for you - one of the ubiquitous Chinese 'mini-lathes' (eg Sieg SC2/3) would do the job for sure, but would set you back a few £££s. I've made joiners between 3 metre...
