    replacement festool atf55

Mafel do a cordless version of their plunge saw that fits their rail system etc. I didn't think Festool did a cordless version? Someone said B & Dekker/De Walt were pulling out the stops now Festool is seriously going at the US market - but this is not cordless either?

A book on hand plane moldings?

Apart from the book I mentioned, a phone call to English Heritage HQ may connect you to useful documentation. My neighbour's son's renovation projects were not of "important" period properties, so he didn't get site visists, but he did get the info he needed.

Cheap Bench Grinder? - Help please

Even with a white (tool steel) wheel it's quite easy to overcook the tool and de temper it, unless the (dry) grinder is a "slow" version running at about 1450 rpm. Standard grinders are about 3000 rpm. If you're a real beginner, get a copy of Ian Kirby's little book on sharpening from Amazon...

How do you rate Ax's 778?

I'm fed up with my 78 rebate single rod fence. Before punting on a second hand Record 778, can anyone comment on the Ax version?

    Vacum veneering on the cheap!

A "full" vacuum appears above a column of mercury of about 30 inches, or alternatively, 32 feet of water. Most (cleaner) vacs will pull about 6 ft of water column, about 15 x 6/32 = 2.8 psi. Better augment the cleaner vac with an old freezer compressor.

Where to get info on period mouldings etc.

Thanks, George! My "Elements" is well thumbed. There's a "Style" book just on Deco, if you like that sort of thing (I do)

A book on hand plane moldings?

Please have a quick look at the post "Where to get info on period mouldings etc." English Heritage have a website.

Where to get info on period mouldings etc.

Some one asked this recently, and I checked with neighbour's son who's renovated a couple of village period properties, but now I can't find original post! General reference of architectural detail down the ages, garden furniture to windows, doors, interiors to attic beams, "Elements of Style"...

    Of bedding and burnishing angles

Lets be fair here, I don't normally burnish as far as90deg, but remembered seeing it printed in the LN leaflet, and it makes a better point re. scraper geometry mimicing an unrealisable low angle plane with cap iron. On reflection, cabinet scrapers sharpened to 90 deg produce a much finer...

    Of bedding and burnishing angles

It's often surprising how often we cannot recognise what we already know! It is easy to think of a plane with a very close set cap iron, as having the same cutting geometry as a scraper, with the useful addition of a mouth. It took till this morning to recognise that the obverse is also true. A...

    Sale of goods, contracts etc

Stick to it Roger! If you have a head office address offer them in writing, the chance to deliver "before you take their breach of contract to the small claims court" This is cheap for you (if you actually need to do it) and expensive lawyers for them. Citizens Advice will give you teh full...

Can you recommend a water based spray lacquer?

Looks good, Maile! You may be interested in this: Apparently Bolloms (no proper website for over a year..) do Hydrocote Resisthane+ pre cat waterbased so you can get it in the UK. This is often featured in FW magazine, so I've had an on line look at this over last couple of days. The US company...

    Moisture in the Workshop

Devon's* pretty damp compared with eastern UK where I grew up. Here we need a dehumidifier indoors or we get mould spots on books on the bookshelf and a bit of mildew in the back of the wardrobe. Even in winter with the c/h heating on the dehumidifier is needed to keep RH around 60%. (it runs...

Source for engineers drill bushings please?

These standard hardened steel bushings are just the job for drilling jigs. In theory you can get them from engineering suppliers, but none of my bookmarked eng/industrial suppliers seem to list these. Any suggestions?

Which product have you been trying out Dan? Water "white" or warm tinted?

Can you recommend a water based spray lacquer?

I get the impression waterbased may be coming of age. Do you have a favourite yet? Seems to be more about them in the USA press, presumably because of their various clean air acts controlling release of volatile hydrocarbons making them essential. Some can aparently redissolve underlying layers...

    Motor power ratings ?

Peak HP does actually exist, so it's not actually a lie, up to you to decide if the power developed just before the windings melt is much of a useful comparison. I suppose it has to be when everyone does it as seems to be the case with vacs etc. in the USA. Even an EU rated motor carries a start...

Adrian, scroll up the page to my first post and look for the last sentence: Click on the word "Here's" which is the link. Lots of relevant info there.
