Help needed sorting out a rampant eucalyptus tree

If its not a difficult one to drop I'll come and do it for you. I'm no pro, but have cut down many beasties bigger than that. If you're concerned about insurance and the like I'm not your man, but if it's got plenty of space to fall then save yourself the money and let me know. Pete

Looking for advice on buying chisels

I've got to agree with Jacob on this point. My Marples cheapies don't really hold their edge for long, but they are sooo easy to get sharp - whatever method you use. In the workshop I tend to use the Tormek but on site I'll use whatever is handy which could be an old Norton India Stone, a credit...

Workbench build - WIP - Almost finished and a small treat!!

Thanks Custard, that helps to set my mind at rest. The Iroko slab really is that big - two of us can just lift it from the floor to the current bench top. When we were moving it into the workshop I dropped it on my foot - even though I was wearing steel toes I still end up with blood soaked...

Workbench build - WIP - Almost finished and a small treat!!

Having browsed many of the workbench WIP threads on here I'm close to the end of the procrastination/design phase of building my new bench. I posted a while ago a large lump of wood which you guys thought was probably Iroko. This is what I intend to use for the front portion of the bench. At...

    Firewood, again.

Last year I cut down a Eucalyptus and left it in large rounds, ready for splitting this year. I should have split it immediately as it tends to go a bit spongy and is very difficult to split once it's had some standing time. So my advice is get it split straight away if you haven't already

Fixing question (now a sort of WIP)

Thanks to all for your advice and comments. I've glued up the panel using ratchets, Titebond and Gorilla Glue (foamy stuff) So far it seems to have worked OK, although it needs a few more hours in the clamps The red sheet was there to protect the ply from the ratchet straps (and to soak up...

Looking for advice on buying chisels

I know this will probably start a war but here goes.... I've been working as a site chippy, joiner, and latterly making some furniture for nearly 25 years and I've only ever owned these: http://www.its.co.uk/pd/M373S6-Marples- ... R373S6.htm I've never felt the need for anything else, and they...

    Timber Quandry

I'll happily have a go at getting them on the roof of my Transit. I can probably arrange storage for you within a few miles from Maidstone in exchange for some of the timber. Let me know if you are interested.

Fixing question (now a sort of WIP)

I'm currently making up a curved bath panel for this bath: The plan is to fix some stacked curved ply ribs to both the floor and the underside of the bath rim and then fix some flexi 6mm Oak veneered plywood to make the panel. It will be vertical, unlike the panel in the picture. I've cut the...

    Woodturning in Tunbridge Wells

I'm about to throw myself headlong onto the slippery slope that is woodturning, and was wondering if any of know of a club close to Tunbridge Wells. The idea is to go along and join, meet some experienced turners, get advice about kit etc and start learning technique. I could just go and buy a...

Glue Gun & Hot Melt Glue

Take a look at Axi's site for hot melt glue - it might not help you make sense of two different colours, but it may make you fell less concerned about what they are both for. http://www.axminster.co.uk/fixing-gluin ... tmelt-glue On the other hand it may make you think "what did he tell me that...

    A news years tip.....

Gavin, I have to say that i didn't expect a frivolous post like mine to produce such a good idea. After reading your reply I went and nicked one of the kids tennis balls, and a few stabs with a bradawl later and hey presto!! Utter genius - thanks! Pete

    A news years tip.....

Just been jigsawing some ply to make some profiled webs for a project. Here's the tip.... If your jigsaw like mine has a patented line obscuring device and regular puffs are needed to reveal said line, don't take a deep breath to fill your lungs ready for a monster dust clearing blow when your...
