    Oak kitchen unit

Phil.p, I don't think it's the case that knowing something was difficult to build gives it soul. What I was trying to say (rather clumsily) is that whenever I build something that is challenging it tends to bring me out of the 'automatic' mode of working and into a whole different 'zone'. I have...

    Oak kitchen unit

The issue of 'soul' or soulless' is an interesting one. I get asked to produce stuff in a similar vein to your excellent kitchen unit quite often and the success of the project is often determined by how 'flawless' it is - in other words lacking in the visual cues and clues that tell us the...

    Fixing studwork to concrete floor

If the wall is not going to have a doorway in it you can even build it with a friction fit and put a fat bead of grip fill under the sole plate. This can actually be surprisingly strong and sometimes is the only way to fit a sole plate. For example if you're installing on to a screeded floor...

Workbench build - WIP - Almost finished and a small treat!!

Phil.p, I guess I was think that if the underside is parallel to the top side, and the back edge parallel to the front edge it will make the whole assembly process that much easier when fitting the under frame etc. I don't have much experience with this kind of joinery to be honest but when...

Workbench build - WIP - Almost finished and a small treat!!

Robin, thanks very much for the offer - that's extremely kind of you. If you let me know your details I'll call you and arrange a time next week to get it over to you (along with some beer tokens of course :) The idea of ripping it down did make me wonder if I'd then end up with two 'canoes'...

Companies providing machine servicing?? Planer thicknesser

You could try Scott and Sargent. I know my mate got them to come out and set up some of his machines when , like you he ran out patience and just needed 'to get it done" No idea how much they charge though.

Workbench build - WIP - Almost finished and a small treat!!

I'm embarrassed to say that since starting this thread and telling you all that procrastination was (almost) over I was wrong. Procrastination continued (and is possibly still going on). Unfortunately I don't get much time to do "me" jobs - the ones I really want to do. Paying jobs and projects...

    Scrollerman for Chippygeoff

I think that what Phil.p is saying is....... .....why don't you just ignore each other and get on with the rest of your lives? And that's the solution. Pretty clear really. Not at all cryptic. That way we get to keep both of you on the forum and get the benefit of two very experienced guys...

    Tongue & Groove - Suffered I have

If you've only screwed up this much on a first attempt with something new I wouldn't beat yourself up too much. I normally need at least three attempts to even get close to a proper result with a new tool/jig. Having said that it's likely that the guys are right that the timber is wonky - so...

    Fitting skirtings

I don't want to start a row here but..... Bricks DO suck up water. Stack three or four bricks (no mortar) in a washing up bowl and pour in two inches of water. Wait half a day or so and then take a look at the 'tide mark' on the bricks. Unless as novo says they are engineering bricks. Or...

    Fitting skirtings

Now you've introduced a whole new issue!! The use of grounds - wooden bits between bricks. I totally agree that if grounds are used then plastering to the floor doesn't matter (to a chippie) However, i haven't seen them used in years.

    Fitting skirtings

Random, I guess that in a flood scenario then less water would end up sucking up the wall - probably. It cannot be a good reason not to plaster down to the floor though. If water travels under the skirting and up the blockwork or stud work it will still eventually stain or damage the plaster finish.

    Fitting skirtings

I can't see the need for the plaster to stop short of the floor. The 'air gap' excuse doesn't make sense. Why would a wall need an air gap? Most plasterers have told me it's so they don't pick up crap off the floor when skimming which would ruin the finish. This sounds feasible but is still not...

That's good to hear Alex. If only you were down here in the South East I could keep you busy for ever and a day!!
