    Ron Paulk work bench

The 'Zed Bench' in all it's glory (?) Total time to erect - less than a minute. Total time to dismantle - less than less than a minute. If anyone wants the plans......

    Ron Paulk work bench

I made one and then cut it up and used the ply for other projects. I thought it looked like a good idea at the time but now I just use a sheet of 18mm MDF resting on six stanley plastic sawhorses. This gets used on every job and is a good bench for tracksawing. I plonk the chop saw on it when...

    Some large wardrobes!

Cheers for the reply. The reason for asking about the base is that I'm trying to simplify and streamline the installation process for built ins. The levelling in of the plinth can end up taking up a disproportionate amount of time so I'm currently trying to find some decent adjustable feet. I...

    Some large wardrobes!

Fine work Mr Yorke. I do a lot of these wardrobes and would like to ask you a few questions if I may. It looks as though your plinth is about 100mm high. Do you achieve this by levelling in a timber base or by using adjustable feet? At the moment I use 75 x 50 PAR with an 18mm MDF top and then...

Diagnosing the cause of a leaking shower

It could be the case that when someone stands in the shower the sealant or even the seal around the waste/trap fails. When the water runs in an empty shower the leak goes away. I've seen this happen in my own house. An ensuite shower used by a lodger only leaked when she was in it. Even on one...

Removing woodworm treatment stains in beams

I've seen a guy using that fizzy stuff for removing stains on clothes (Vanish?) to get dark marks out of Oak. Seemed to work.

    Engineered flooring... shed?

Can't say for sure but I reckon the veneers will start peeling after ............. the first really wet day followed by a dry warm one. Maybe a bit later, but not much. But that's just my guess. :)

Hollow grinding and a Tormek question

Andy, to be honest every fibre of my being cries out "'tis against God and Nature" when i see a hollow ground plane iron or chisel. And then, when I need to re-establish a primary bevel on a badly dinged blade or a boot fair find my Tormek looks oh so inviting (compared to my paving stone grade...

Hollow grinding and a Tormek question

I've read somewhere (I think on Dieter Schmid's website) that irons for wooden planes shouldn't have a hollow grind. Does anyone know if this really makes any difference to the performance of the iron? Also, when I grind on my Tormek I find it hard to get the grind square to the iron. I've...

Can anyone recommend what wood i should use?

If I were you I'd use Spax M-cut screws, and then just drill a pilot hole and countersink with one of those Trend Snappy combined drill bits and then screw away. I've built hundreds of cabinets like this from MDF and it's fine. If you're butt jointing 18mm boards use a 40mm No 4.

2" Thick Shelves - Edge Finishing?

I'd just knock off the edges with a finely set block plane. But then that's what I do with almost everything :) :)

    Best Cordless Jigsaw?

Personally the only jigsaw I've ever actually thought was worth owning is one of the Festool Carvex models. They appear to be the only ones that can cut deep (100mm) and not have the blade deflect causing undercutting. I don't own one as I've got to wait until my Makita blows up or burns out...

    wooden worktops

I'm currently refurbishing a bar and we're using the 40mm Oak tops from worktop express. In my opinion they can't be beaten on price and value. There are better worktops out there, but not at the prices from WTE.

    Slide rules who uses them?

I'm 47 and went to a grammar school yet I've never seen one in my life. I have heard they exist though. Presumably they are like some kind of portable abacus?

    So annoyed with myself :(

I'm re-furbing a bar at the moment and just dragged my freshly sharpened and beautifully honed and polished German Ulmia smoother over a lump of Oak only to ding it on not one, not two, but three buried bits of metal. Blade now looks like a rip saw #-o I s'pose I could use it as a toothing...

    reclaimed oak box

I chuffin' love that. Exceptionally simple clean design but really well made. It looks very nice indeed. Do the hinge pins show through on the sides of the box?
