Coffee table - and a lesson learned

For Beau and any other joint junkies here's how it goes together - like I said nothing clever. I don't know about you guys but when it came to cutting the mitres (on the tablesaw) I was crapping myself. I always get slightly more nervous about cuts the further into a project I get. I'd never...

Coffee table - and a lesson learned

Thanks Martin. The joints are as you say everything, especially the mitres. Plenty of test cuts and machine adjustment and then some careful tweaking with some of my latest toys (pieces later). I've actually used more hand tools on this little job than anything I've done recently. All very...

Coffee table - and a lesson learned

Always happy to provide some gratuitous joint pictures Beau. They're fairly straightforward but hey, a well fitting joint is a thing of beauty right? I'll post some pics when I knock it down tonight.

Coffee table - and a lesson learned

My bench is fairly big - 1220mm x 2440mm but you're right, the table is pretty 'wee'. It's 445mm long by 285mm wide and 225mm high. The board thickness is 32mm thick. Not sure why the client wants it that small but don't really care - he gets what he wants. It's the fourth coffee table I've...

Coffee table - and a lesson learned

Just completed successful dry fit/clamp up of this little table for a client. It's a bugger to get together but all joints cramp up nice and tight. I'll post piccies when it's glued up and finished if anyone is interested. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Cabinet doors - rebate or slot?

Strength wise with modern glues it'll make little difference. Agreed that rebates is quicker and easier but not by much. We sometimes do this on 'rough' jobs where time is everything, but panels set into grooves looks so much more 'pro'. Do it like Martin suggested with a loose tongue on the...

    record bandsaws

I'll be there on the Friday. If you're there then I'll buy you a coffee and you can tell me all about your bandsaw in exchange!!

    record bandsaws

I have it on good authority (a geezer from Record Power) that there will be 'excellent and exciting' deals across the range of their machinery at the upcoming D&M tool Show at Kempton next week. If he's being truthful I'll be getting myself a BS400 on the basis of the reviews I've read on this...

Where to make a living making hand-made?

Personally I think you can make a living selling more or less anything more or less anywhere (with obvious exceptions of course) The key seems to be marketing/branding. I have two mates in Vancouver, both making furniture and wooden items. One has spent a considerable amount of time and...

    Darkening a woodstain?

Not sure how or why this happens but I too have noticed that stains/dyes etc (even oil) appears differently depending on how smooth something is sanded. I've been told that Oil finishes are least effective on a highly sanded surface (over 220g) Osmo themselves suggest only going to 120g, so it...

    Help for a newbie

Best way for drilling straight plumb holes is to train your hand and eye. Stand a square up next to your drill and use it as a guide. Do it often enough and you'll start to recognise 'plumb'.

    Help, which table saw

I have the Axi 12" trade saw and use it everyday for making both solid and panel furniture. As long as you keep a good sharp blade in it, appropriate for the job (none of this general purpose stuff) and regularly clean the dust from the fence track it's absolutely fine. I've just finished...

MDF shaker doors and Wealden groovers!?

If you're using MDF for everything I'd use the 6.4 groover set 10mm deep. Cut the panels exactly to size and glue em up. You don't need to worry about movement since its MDF and having it dead to size helps with getting it all square I find. If it's proper tree wood then you need to allow room...

    Router for door hinges

I'd go for the T5. Thats what I use with the two piece skeleton jig. I think the T4 needs an adaptor or something for it to use the trend jigs. Not sure, but I think I heard this at a show last year.

    Butchers block commission request

Professional butchers blocks almost always have a border and are through bolted. Is it going to be used in a professional environment or just a domestic kitchen?

Just when I thought I was getting a bit saner...

I once loaded someone else trolley with a couple of handfuls of groceries and was about to carry on pushing it around when I noticed the small child sitting in the seat wasn't mine. Then I remembered that I hadn't even brought my child with me. And the child in the trolley was obviously Asian...
