Hello (plus a question about bandsaws)

Hi Adrian, I'm about to take delivery of a Record BS400 (hopefully tomorrow or Thursday) You're more than welcome to come and have a play when it's set up and working (probably within an hour and half of it getting here!!) I'm just outside Tunny Wells in Pembury. PM me if interested.

    Look what the postie brought....

Thanks for all the knob & screw info. JohnPW - it was probably too much - £43 inc carriage. I've bought a few old stanley and record hobbies before for £10 - £20 and they've been a piece of crap so I reckoned it was worth spending a bit more to get one I could use pretty much straight away.

Now to make a knob for it and find a screw thingy. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Quickie Workbench WIP

Leg frames domino'd, glued and clamped up. Bottom stretcher things glued and screwed on. And there we have it. Not the prettiest bench i have to admit but it'll do just fine for my needs (and the needs of the Anti Zombie Force, of which I am apparently Supreme Commander.)

    Quickie Workbench WIP

Mine were not like that when I got them. They were originally planed up about a year ago for a project for the kids a playhouse I believe. I just gave them another quick whizz over the PT to make sure all sizes were equal.

    VICE JAWS

Oak and Leather for me. It feels.....very British!! And it works well. I take the point about grit getting embedded but if I'm putting anything that shouldn't be marked in the vice I give it a quick wipe with my hand to check.

    Quickie Workbench WIP

Having cleared out the 'toolroom' (polite phrase for room full of junk, stuff I think I'll need, dark matter and dead spiders) I've decided it needs a decent bench for mounting my Tormek and Brierley grinder. I also plan to bolt on a Record Engineers vice and generally use it for dirty...

    Last man standing

Good on yer!! Not too sure about selling my Lie Nielsen block plane though. I think I'll just add to my collection...

    Last man standing

I presume your comment was a bit tongue in cheek, (if not, apologies) but I think you're right. We all moan about the decline (or death) of the British tool industry and here's a company not only making some very nice kit but also obviously trying to reboot the image of British toolmaking (as...

    Crowd funding - any experience?

My 2 cents worth: Personally i think the DVD has had it's day. I own a full set of your DVD's and the first thing I did was transfer them to my Mac and then onto my 'phone/iPad so that i can watch them wherever I am. (Don't worry - they ain't going anywhere they shouldn't) I prefer to watch...

    Recommendations for a mortice gauge?

Excellent tip CC. Just done it to mine and it's now so smooth it operates from voice commands only!! I rubbed on a bit of candle wax as well just 'cos.....

    Hand Plane restoration/tune up

I have a Lie Nielsen 102 block plane and am 'convinced' that it's a better plane than any of my other blockies, but I'm also pretty sure thats because it helps me justify the cost. I can tell myself that it was worth it because it performs better and makes me a better craftsman. Obviously not...

    Hand Plane restoration/tune up

I totally agree. The kind of woodwork that I do doesn't require anything like this degree of accuracy. I quite often find myself thinking that a good session of lapping my planes soles would be a good idea, but normally get bored after 10 minutes. I then look at my small collection of woodies...

    Hand Plane restoration/tune up

I came across this video on youtube and thought it might provoke some interesting debate. I've never seen anything quite like it before. The music can be a bit 'irksome', but the guy even gives you some instructions in the comments section to help with this!! Typical German. (I should know, I...

New content from St. Roy of Underhill

If you'll allow me to momentarily veer off topic briefly.... I''m delighted to come across someone who thinks comic books are an important part of culture (!). Could I ask you where you'd place the Silver Surfer? Villain or good guy? I must add, I'm not a comic book geek, just someone who...

    Recommendations for a mortice gauge?

So would this explain why rather than fitting the knife in a square hole on the stem it's fitted in a round hole? Presumably so that I can set it slightly 'toe'd in' or 'toe'd out', depending on your point of view.

In my case you know you're getting old when you go to bed before your children......... .......and your kids are only 10 yrs old.

    Recommendations for a mortice gauge?

Not having any idea what Robt. Wearing et al refers too would you care to expand on that please?

    Recommendations for a mortice gauge?

I have one of those, bought from Axi I believe. Actually it's a combination gauge (at least I think that's what you call them - single pin on one side of the stem and usual double adjustable on the other side). It seems to work OK although I have recently noticed that the stock is not square to...
