    Timber canopy advice please

If for example you wanted 8" square pillars I would laminate up a bunch of planed up 8 x 1" boards to form the pillar. Use a decent w/p glue and loads of clamps. Alternate the grain etc and you should be good. Someone else will no doubt come along in a moment and give an excellent reason why...

What search terms should I use to find old construction wood

This article may help: http://www.wood-database.com/wood-artic ... all-guide/ Probably the closest you are going to get is either the Siberian Larch as mentioned by RobinBHM or Slash Pine, sold by Associated Timber http://www.associatedtimber.co.uk/produ ... pitch-pine

How do I joint very large, very long beams?

C16 will be fine. It's only a loft floor for storage. It's already well over engineered at 8 x 2 or whatever. Honestly 6 x 2 would be plenty. It's not a normal domestic floor - just a loft.

How do I joint very large, very long beams?

M8s should be fine. Use about three or four each side of the joint. Don't put them in a straight line - one on the top third of the joist, the next on the bottom third, then back to the top etc etc

How do I joint very large, very long beams?

Steve, the toothed washers are there to prevent any turning motion. If you go with Steel plates then you don't need them. The ply WILL be strong enough for normal flooring loads as long as you don't put a grand piano and bath full of water over the joint. If the ply doesn't fill you confidence...

How do I joint very large, very long beams?

A simple butt joint reinforced by a 1.5metre long plate either side of the joint would do it. Through bolted with those spiky washers (Not sure what they're actually called - we always called them dog washers). I've also used a couple of layers of 18mm ply either side - surprisingly strong.

    Kids, tools and accidents.

I'm with you all the way on this one. I have two young kids, 7 (going on 17) year old daughter and 10 year old son, and whilst I hate the thought of them coming to any harm I also feel they need to be allowed to experience certain things - accidents if you will. I see so many parents these days...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Thats for your comments. It's fine with me if you copy it. I copied from M&S as the post said. I'm afraid I didn't take any other pictures and the furniture is now with it's new owner. Have a look here if you want to have a go at copying one (that's what I did)...

    Ply Box Joint Success

Which version of the Leigh jig do you have? I'm considering buying one next year for doing short runs (10 max) of drawers and would be keen to hear what your experiences are with it.

    Kids, tools and accidents.

Fortunately nothing too serious. Probably more useful for him in terms of tool safety than 100 lessons or lectures. Hope the little guy isn't too traumatised and gets back in the saddle - get well soon young master 8squared.

    Spindle or router tooling

I've just done a quickie CAD drawing of what I mean. Can anyone see a fundamental flaw in what I've drawn?

    Paul Sellers - Trademark?

Having just had a major argument with my evil oval skew chisel I hereby lay claim to the term 'wood pizza', as in 'that spotty git's got a face like a pizza!"

    Spindle or router tooling

Thanks for that but that particular cutter is no use for 18mm boards. The fat end of the Ogee is wider than 6mm - I think it's about 9 or 10mm.

What tool did you buy today?

James, that is quite simply a disgracefully clean and tidy workshop. Posting pictures like that is known as cruel and unusual punishment. Please cease and desist immediately (or mess it up a bit and take some more pictures) Thank you. :D :D

    Circular saw sharpening jig

So glad you posted that link. It reminded me of how much I loved Twin Peaks all those years ago. Also reminded me that the theme tune (Julee Cruse) was covered by David Gedge and the Wedding Present - superb. Thanks

    Spindle or router tooling

I've been searching through my catalogues trying to find a cutter set for producing panel doors that have an Ovolo or Ogee style mould and that can be used on 18mm MDF (Rails and Stiles) with 6mm MDF for the panels. Preferably for the spindle Moulder. Ideally I'm looking for the type where the...

Looking for Newel post fixings. SORTED WITH PICTURES

Graham, I've used one of these before https://www.s3i.co.uk/modular-505-wall- ... fixing.php Obviously the base of the post needs to be routed or chopped out to allow the flange to sit flush and then bored for some kind of dowel or 'tenon' in effect. When I did this I bored out the newel to...

I love the way it's front right foot is just lifting off the ground - it makes it appear to be on the move. Very clever and extremely elephantine. I wish I could carve.
