    Good value chisels

Obviously these were bought to be used - why else would he buy them? Not for looks thats for sure. Like Phil says it is actually a bit 'disorientating' when they don't line up properly. Maybe not a problem for you, but for someone trying to learn it certainly didn't help.

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

These forums (and probably others like it) are not the domain of full time joiners/cabinet makers/carpenters as a rule. I know many, many carpenters and joiners and a dozen or so cabinet makers and not a single one of them are on these forums, despite my encouraging them to join. Neither have...

    Good value chisels

My apprentice has had three sets of these and they've all gone back. The flats on the handles are not co-planar with the actual chisel blade - not just by a little bit either - they're miles out. I'd steer well clear of them in future. To be fair to Axminster they've now just given him the money...

What do you pay for 19mm oak mdf sheet goods etc

Sounds a little bit high to me. I pay about £26 ex VAT for 19mm Oak Veneered MDF A/B and about £20.50 for 6mm. Not sure what I last paid for edging. If it's a builders timber yard that may account for the not-so competitive pricing. They probably don't sell so much of it. Just guessing.

    Good value chisels

They ain't pretty, no wooden handles - but they will take a proper thumping and are pretty much indestructible. And they take a pretty good edge. 1/4" up to 2" 'spade' http://www.my-tool-shed.co.uk/p1094950/ ... _info.html

    oak ledged and braced door

If it helps then I can happily confirm that AJB is pretty spot on with prices - at least down here in the South East/London. A custom external door from me starts at £1000 ex VAT. Then it'll depend on how fiddly/involved the actual door is - panelled, FLB, inlaid, etc. Add the frame and the VAT...

    Web tracking conundrum

Duck Duck Go might help. Although I've never tried it I believe it's a non-trackable anonymous browser, although I could well be wrong. There are other ways of stopping which will involve hiding IP addresses, turning on weapons-grade security, blocking cookies etc but you need someone with more...

Calling all kitchen fitters - advice sought.

A standard 600mm wide base unit can easily be made from a single standard sheet of MDF, or MR MDF. A set of 4 plastic cabinet legs is currently about £1.75 from ironmongery Direct A pair of reasonable 35mm cabinet hinges will set you back about £6. So if you're not costing in your time then a...

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

Quite right. The very idea that there has been a 'renaissance' of the chipbreaker' is an utter joke. Amongst anyone who uses planes for a living the chipbreaker has always been a part of our knowledge/armoury or whatever you want to call it. Most of them don't even know the names that have been...

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

I've been reading this thread with interest and it prompted me to dig out some old notebooks from my first ventures into working with wood - my C&G in carpentry and Joinery back in 1985. I found a scribbled drawing of a standard Stanley Bailey type set-up with my appallingly hand written notes...

    Straighforward plain plane advice please

I'd try and find a good secondhand Stanley 60 1/2. I've got several of these (one in the van, one in the workshop and a couple of others in various toolboxes) and love 'em. It's low angle with an adjustable mouth and perfect for the edge treatment you describe. For levelling dowels etc I'd...

    Squareness tolerances in cabinet making

Could you not plane it square? Less timber removed that way.

Help setting up a table saw

I've noticed with my saw that when ripping thick timber (75mm or over) it can often scorch like that at the beginning of the cut. For ages it puzzled me until i realised what was happening. The cut was closing up fractionally BEFORE it got to the riving knife allowing a scorch (caused by the...

    Squareness tolerances in cabinet making

I would say that it all depends where the particular piece of wood is going to end up being used and what relationships/interactions it will have with other pieces. If its going to be a bearer for a table top for instance then it could probably be used as is without too much of a problem as...

Where's the best new/used deal to be had on a Domino folks?

Generally FFX tools have the best prices on the Festool gear, although occasionally they'll be beaten by others with special offers. The 500 is currently £562 for the basic or £625 for the set. AFAIK this is about the best at the moment. Hopefully someone else knows where it can be had for less...

    Clamp choices

K Body Revos are without doubt the Cats Pajamas of the clamping world, or in the words of the apprentice 'they is proper boss clamps innit". However they are seriously expensive. We use Axminster trade t bar sash clamps mainly and find that used with care they are fine for more or less...

    Understanding mill markings on timber

I've only just read this thread and here's what I've found out over the years of dealing with a few merchants: Apart from the known markings and abbreviations (FAS etc) it's almost always their own dialect of hieroglyphs. Circles with slashes through them, oblique lines bisecting triangles...

    My least favourite job.....

Not enough room Bob. Also I don't do this kind of thing more than once a month (and I often give it to the apprentice to do as punishment for being young and fit and healthy)

    My least favourite job.....

Probably true Rodders. He used to go direct to a local supplier but got cheesed off after failing to find one straight lining in a batch of 20 or so. The supplier told him to stop being so fussy - the screws will pull it straight. The he came to me. The other bonus is that if I'm careful with...
