Indeed there are no silly questions, but you may end up getting some truly daft answers. :D :D Welcome

How to avoid hours of handplaning

Although i don't do my dimensioning by hand (normally finish off by hand for the last 1 - 2 mm) as a rule I would not remove a whole load of material (either on the PT or TS or BS), then finish plane and then cut joinery and glue up on the same day. Maybe I'm over cautious but my normal routine...

What is the Best and Your Favourite Movie of all time??

Just watched it. Great film. I completely agree with your comment about the beach walk scene.

What is the Best and Your Favourite Movie of all time??

Best/Favourite would be Million Dollar Hotel (Dir. Wim Wenders) and either Panic, starring William H Macey, Neve Campbell and Donald Sutherland, or True Romance, mainly for the very un-PC dialogue between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper - truly one of the best scenes ever in Movie history...

    Great tutorial on ebonising

Looks pretty straightforward in terms of making the solution. I've used Wire wool and vinegar before but never though to combine it with a tea solution. I guess the next issue is application. I normally brush on a coat, wait 5 mins and then wipe off and repeat after an hour or so, until I get...

Not woodworky, but first time in the garden....

I can verify that they do indeed BBQ quite nicely. I was out about three weeks ago with my lad on some private woodland and we bagged 18 of the critters with Air Rifles. If you can be bothered there's a reasonable amount of meat on them. 18 were enough for us two and four other hungry teenagers.

Finish straight on to planed surface?

I don't always agree with me either. I can't even be sure if I did read that Krenov statement somewhere or if I dreamt it. I know that when I've edge jointed boards that are shiny and burnished off the plane they are much more slip when rubbed. If I lightly sand the edges and then rub joint the...

    Plywood box construction

Routing the dovetails on ply will likely result in a mess of tearout. If they're going to be painted I think I'd just butt joint, glue and pin/screw. Quick bit of filler, give 'em a good sanding and then paint. They'll be strong enough to withstand the young'uns and they'll be quick to make.

Finish straight on to planed surface?

I seem to recall that James Krenov once suggested that a burnished surface from the plane, especially a nice woodie was NOT the best surface for glue to adhere to. Logically this would see right as I assume that glue relies on penetrating the surface of the wood by a very small amount, so...

    Re-cycling MDF

Personally I think common sense and the trusting thereof is fine when it only concerns/impacts oneself. As soon as there is the potential for others to be adversely affected by your 'common sense' then a good dose of hard evidence chased down with a liberal application of research and factual...

Why is the UK Timber Yards Sooo messed up?

For me it depends on a number of factors: How busy am I? Do I want the job? (If it involves humping around fun sheets of MFC then probably not) Do I like/trust the client? Is the client a builder or a punter? (For the record I charge builders more since they normally keep you waiting for...

    Re-cycling MDF

Fair enough. I can't argue with the evidence. I still maintain it stinks though. I dont have a huge burner and the flue is only about 3 metres above ground level at it's highest point (low lying single storey workshop) so maybe that's why I smell it more. Or maybe I stink of burning tyres and...

    Re-cycling MDF

So some of us think it smells and some don't. Interesting indeed. To be honest I'd far rather it was re-purposed into something useful without releasing any toxins into the atmosphere. I'm pretty sure that all wood waste from our local tip is incinerated elsewhere to provide heat/power if some...

    cap-iron - practicalties

I've heard of these but never seen one - BB do you have one to show us? (pleeeeease) Did Stanley offer a version?

    Re-cycling MDF

Either your nose has stopped working or you have different MDF oop north. Every time I burn it if I go outside it absolutely stinks. I can get away with chucking a few fiddly bits on a very hot fire now and again but otherwise it smells like someone's burning tyres.

    Re-cycling MDF

I've got to that stage again where I've got loads of offcuts of MDF - plain vanilla Medite of almost all known thicknesses and some veneered bits - Walnut, maple and Oak. I'm loath to burn it (it stinks to high heaven and sooner or later the neighbours will complain). If I load it onto my van...

What (type - abrasive medium) are you using to finish tools?

1000g DMT plate and leather. I used to use a compound (not sure what) but I've lost it so just leather now. To be honest can't tell the difference

My first project in a while - First WIP Post

Looks very nice to me. The mitres have pulled up tight from what I can see and on a 'simple' design like yours it all hangs on the mitres, so well done. It's a law of woodworking that you can never have too many clamps. Ever. No matter how many you have. Ever.
