    Thanks all for the input. A quick update: Interestingly, as soon as I slackened off the two bevel adjustment screws the sole plate flattened out nicely and now shows no sign of twist whatsoever.     Thanks for the clarification. I will have to check my saws later although I'm fairly sure they'll have the hardened teeth as they are all pretty cheap. Good to know what to look out for though in any future car boot sales etc.
