    That end grain shot is showing that some sort of filler has already been used. It has shrunk more since that filler was used so, I think you either live with it and keep filling it or cut it out. That is a horrible stave.

    Understanding MDF

    Make a bird box or something out of everything you think you could use, offcuts are easily available and cheap. That way you actually know what to expect rather than taking on board what others have found out. Knowing is all with woodwork and you can't beat a good ponce about with stuff.
