    Moving a wood burner.

Hi all, I'm having a major re-jig of my workshop and I'm finding myself stymied in my attempts to organise. The location of my wood burning stove seems to be in the way of any organisational structure. I can come up with. It is at the far end of my workshop from the door and does not heat my...

Reynolds Hand Morticing Machine restored (finally).

Apologies for the Necropost, but I'm looking for information on my Reynolds 'Blackfriar' mortise machine. I bought a set of Reynolds branded chisels for it, but they don't fit. Their taper is too large and they have indexing points which are not present in the machine. I can't find...

    To insult a woodworker.

But... but... carpenters are chippies? What did he want to be called, wood botherer?

If you like soft surfaces it is worth a look. I suspect part of it is being slightly alkali, softening the surface fibres.

It's exactly what it sounds like to be honest. It's a finish made using Castile type soap and water. Couple of different versions depending on use case. Creates a very soft surface. It's cheap and doesn't upset the look of the wood so I quite like it so far, but only tried it on a couple or...

    Metal band on chisel handle?

Good find! I was trying to find the patent. Explains a lot, though I'm dubious on the value of a tin/antimony alloy adding much to the strength, especially given the heat effect.

You're very kind, I definitely intend to do more carving as time/commissions/inspiration permits!

    Metal band on chisel handle?

I must admit that is where I got my google search term from! I'm not sure how exactly it works, despite the sketch. If it ever breaks please post some pictures, I'd love to see the guts. Two reasons I can think of: -the top ferrule mushrooms over which leaves a sharp edge -a ferrule can damage...

    Metal band on chisel handle?

Never seen one before, but wilfin patent handles are a thing!

    Show us a carving

While not a patch on the other offerings on this thread, this is my first attempt at carving aside from a few simple marks and a simple relief inspired by Eric Gill's Eve. Christmas present for my wife: oak keepsake box with curly maple lid. Soap finish overall. It's been a great project to...

    How to set a saw

Cheers, I have an anglepoise on my workbench for such things, and have tried the marker but struggle to get it only on the tooth I want. Magnifier is next, I had hoped at 30 it wouldn't be necessary! Thanks for your time.

    Power file for saw sharpening

I do a bit of saw restoration myself. When I come across a saw with broken teeth, I have a jig using an angle grinder, slitting disc and a couple of reference surfaces/points to get consistent depth of cut and tooth spacing. Once I have run the saw through that, I file away any remaining...

    How to set a saw

Ken Hawley is the greatest national treasure no-one has ever heard of. I'm fairly comfortable setting my and saws, ok with my big cross cuts but need to get more comfortable with my back saws.

    Consolidated PBY Catalina

Gorgeous, i love your plan for retirement. When I practice something tangential to my normal work it often ends up as a gift for someone, they get a handmade thing and I don't have to find homes for 10,000 practice pieces. I dare say i will now look through your back catalogue and drool. Have...

    CNC advice please

This would be my recommendation. When your standards are high and budget is small this is the way. I built my cnc mill and although not as attractive as commercial options, it cost a fraction for the equivalent capability. Your budget is much higher than mine. You could build an exceptional...

    FTAGH Moulding Planes

For those of us with small babies, the difference between 2:06am and 2:06pm are not so far apart 😆

I would very much like to give these a good home, if i may. Postage would be to Wales.

Child labour - when did you start you kids off in DIY

Thanks to all who have taken time to share their experiences! I've had some experience engaging the general public in making, but my own children will be a new adventure, I'll try and keep these things all in mind :)

Child labour - when did you start you kids off in DIY

My son is yet to show even the slightest interest in design, making or tools. No practical skills whatsoever. He is only 2.5 weeks old, so there is time I suppose. Those who have managed to get their progeny interested, what did you do/avoid?

    Travel Tool Chest / Workbench

This is really excellent. Beautifully made and cleverly designed. I also have the issue of needing to keep making stuff wherever I am going, so have a design for a (rather more utilitarian) workbench/toolbox that i hope I may have time for in the next decade.
