    Shed roof

I probably didn't explain properly... The shed IS taken apart. The T&G wooden sides are OK - the roof sections (OSB with a timber frame) have disintegrated. The timber sides and floor are, I think, salvageable. They'll need treating etc before they are erected in the back yard (she's in a...

    Shed roof

My daughter is buying her house. (They've rented for years but the landlord is selling up.) One change is that she can abandon the rather inconvenient allotment and dig up the back yard instead. The shed needs to move. It is a standard B&Q type 6'x6' and the roof is made of Weetabix Board...

    Lathe sale

I don't need the lathe - but I'd be very interested in a wife like that! Good luck with the sale.

    Gin bottle gift box

Fairy Nuff - and you are quite right; An old incandescent bulb was kept constantly hot and gave a constant light. Other technologies are constant flashes (?50Hz) and though the human eye can't detect it, that gives rise to interference patterns if you use another flickering medium such as film...

    Studding detector

I used to point mine at my son. 9 times out of ten it started beeping. I became worried about my son. Sorry. Perhaps the wrong thread...

    Joke thread

She'd got pretty well everything else wrong, so "ma marie" will be a perfectly correct quote of what she said.

    My dilemma

I have one. Not used it much yet (bought in December - other bits of Daily Life seriously in the way since) but I am cautiously quite impressed. Very first job was to plane and thickness an oak pew seat. Big failure: Failed to spot one of the buried nails! Replacement blades are little...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

That's interesting... I generally use hinges. :);):( (Sorry - wrong thread, but the Joke Thread is getting a bit unfunny too.)

    Things that bug you!!

Why does ME going to bed before I am knackered result in YOU being awake until 3 or 4? Is this some new form of telepathy?

Anyone used a radial arm saw for ripping lengths of timber

As others have said. Don't! For a while, a radial arm saw was all I had - but it only took one near-miss when ripping. Never again! (Sold it on to someone - warned about the rip cutting and deliberately hid the equally scary dado cutting attachment)

In which year did you start woodworking

    That's a good "borrow"!

In which year did you start woodworking

That resonates well with me. "About 1952" A bit earlier than me - mine was a model sailing boat, carved from a bit of 2x2" with a lead strip for the keel and a Mother-made sail. Worked probably not quite as well as I remember. I remember it sailing brilliantly. I think I was six (maybe...

Adam W: That's a very serious saw blade in the photo....

Anyone made a scissor lift table?

I built a raising bed for my DeWalt site saw, built around a standard car (screw) scissor jack. It worked fine. For about three weeks. The force required to open the "scissors" from a flat condition is huge - and simply stripped the thread. I've replaced that with a small hydraulic trolley...

    Detached garage modernisation/conversion advice

+1 for that. If it were mine: I would rebuild a tad wider - take in as much of the path as you can get away with - the building is quite long and thin. If the "party wall" is replaced where it is, you could add your own guttering to catch the neighbour's drips if that made it easier - but...

    Golden wedding anniversary gift ideas

Many thanks for all those pointers. Had I not been bone idle, I'd have done a bit of poking myself. Have bought three on FleaBay - and now have over a year to plan and construct something suitable in which to insert at least one of them!

    Golden wedding anniversary gift ideas

I like that... (our golden wedding is coming up next year!) However, not being an avid collector of old pennies, I don't happen to have a 1973 penny in my jacket lining. Is there a relatively simple way to get hold of one?
