    Crazy humidity today

… makes a mental note not to open both ends of my workshop to get warmer air in it. Mine is well insulated and low humidity in there yesterday, but have made the mistake before of opening it up, only to watch a low RH shoot upwards.

Anyone had a new oil boiler installed recently?

I have an oil boiler (not a combi) It’s an HRH Wallstar. About 20 years old. We’ve lived here for 15 years, and had it serviced every year by the local guy who originally installed it for my predecessor. It has been reliable, but did break down one year on Christmas Eve. The same guy was round...

    Domestic Generator

Certainly feasible. You need to establish what power those items will consume and buy a genny that will cope with that load continuously. and you also need to consider how you will get power to those items that don’t have a three pin plug. Please don’t consider a lead with a 3 pin plug at both...

    Bandsaw tuition

… and when you eventually decide you want to buy a bigger one, hang onto your little one if you can. I find my little delta one still very useful along with the big RP one. Useful for doing tighter radius without changing blades on RP.

    Heating thermostat in the hallway

For me, having the thermostat in the living room wouldn’t make sense. We have a log burner and are self sufficient in logs. This would simply turn off CH to the rest of the house.

    Protecting tools from the cold

I don’t worry about them getting cold, but damp is bad.

    Heating a insulated workshop

If insulated, what aspect of it is the least well insulated? I built a long workshop split into two rooms; one a pure workshop with a 1M wide steel door with insulation between the inner and outer steel panels. The other room is more garage, housing a tractor and other outdoor stuff. The...

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

My solution for teenage excessive showers was to add a push button timer in the airing cupboard which you had to press before going into the bathroom. You could set different durations on the circuit board, e.g. 2 mins, 5, 10 or 20. worked a treat!

Metabo hc260 thicknesser bed height not adjusting

That’s happened to mine twice over quite a few years of use and abuse. You may well find that if you get your head underneath it looking up (uncomfortable) you can work out what is jammed and why. One time it was straightforward for me. The other time I had to do some dismantling.

    LED lighting for workshop

I built a 2 room workshop, each is 10M x 5M approx. In the room where I do woodwork I put in eight 600x600mm panels in two rows of four. From memory I think they are 4000k and 4000lumens and 30 watts. They are superb and I no longer have any individual lights for different machines. in the...

Any electric oven experts in here?

The heating element won’t switch itself on and off; that’s a function of the thermostat in conjunction with the on/off/control knob. So the odds are the element itself will be fine once you have identified the problem. I would replace the thermostat which is most likely the problem. However, I...

    Electric hand planers

I’ve had a Bosch one for a couple of decades. Not manu miles on the clock at all. I never use it in the workshop (either PT or hand planes) but do use it on the odd occasion for taking a bit of the bottom of doors when new carpet requires it.

    Fancy/better quality household plug...

Embarrassing confession/memory, when still a teenager living with mum and dad 50 years ago, their boiler packed up, and the immersion heater was disconnected. I got the thickest cable I could find in the garage and reconnected it. I didn’t see the point of cutting it to size for a very temporary...

Where do you hang your clothes at night?

Before I married (a decade or three ago) I had a house with a bedroom also with a suitably wide recess between chimney and wall. Whilst wide enough for a good wardrobe I had no money after buying it. But a round metal pole fit to put in a wardrobe was dirt cheap. I hung everything that for 10:years.

Snipe, what am I doing wrong?

I also have the hc260. I agree with rogexwhit also. Once the machine is set up right, control of the workpiece in and out is crucial. Practice and you will get better. It’s rare I suffer nowadays. I do use a pair of rollers for very long stuff, say over 2M, but it still needs controlling at the...

Cleaning old dirty brass clock movement

Re question do you need to remove all the cogs etc if using ultrasound bath. It does depend on the state of it. lots of dirt will come out even if still assembled, but you won’t really get to see if there is a wear problem. What is the problem causing you to want to clean it? I have put whole...

Cleaning old dirty brass clock movement

As Nickds1 says, don’t use 3 in 1 or wd 40. whilst you don’t say what type of clock movement it is, how old or how big, if you are taking it to bits, it’s worth using a cheapo ultra sound cleaner. They have been used by clock and watch makers for decades. If it is an old clock and the bearings...
