Anyone installed an external flue for a log burning stove in a two storey house?

+1 re an internal chimney. our neighbour’s 2 storey house was a 70s bungalow, now 2 storey. Previous owners ran an external pipe . Chunky because insulated it made the place look like a chip shop frier. The two 45 degree bends badly affected draw, making lighting it problematic. Since replaced...

    Newark Show

By and large disappointing I’d say (but I could easily have spent a fortune on Peter’s stand!). A big redeeming feature for me is that the show ground is on an old RAF airfield, and there is an excellent aircraft museum there which I went spent a lot more time in than the woodwork exhibition...

After a Budget square that’s accurate

Perhaps not helpful, but years ago I was very pleased to receive a large Trend T square for Christmas. Sadly I’ve never found the need to make parallelogram shaped stuff, and since it was swmbo bought it it still hangs in my workshop to this day. Stuart

    Woodrat or Leigh Dovetail jig?

Certainly the first couple of times you use it for any type of joint you will be referencing the instruction book, but once it clicks it’s fine. But probably true of the Leigh too maybe. e.g. For sliding dovetail shelves. Set the dovetail bit at an appropriate depth for the two vertical ends...

    Woodrat or Leigh Dovetail jig?

I have No experience of the Leigh jig, but have had a wood rat for >20 years. I bought it with dovetails in mind, and it does work well for that purpose. I suspect that if you just want a device to give you perfect fitting dovetail joints every time, then the Leigh jig may be easier and more...

    Loft flooring, OSB or ply?

It will be walked on. The hatch is close to a gable end they will be walking and storing stuff up to 16 ft away from the hatch. Stuart

    Loft flooring, OSB or ply?

I’ve never bought or used OSB in my life. my stepson looking to put the equivalent of 4 full sheets of something in the loft for storage, and has figured out that cutting 8 ft x 4ft sheets into 8x2s would be a lot cheaper than flooring boards, and given it’s intended use butt joints are fine...

    OMG OMG OMG 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

One possibly surprising use for them is Chiropody. I first saw this in action when my wife started having a visiting one at home. They are good for reducing the thickness of toe nails. Given my own 68 year old ones have been a gnarled problem for decades I got her to do mine. It was a...

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

Dibs-h. Could you post a link to the leds that worked for you? I also have 20w halogens in the cooker hood, and have bought LEDs to replace them 3 times… but they were all too fat for the glass to go back in, so not approved by swmbo.

    New Year, new Bandsaw!

Just a thought as you say your ideal bandsaw doesn’t seem to exist, if you have the space to keep your old one as well, it’s really useful for me having a smaller one set up with a small blade as well as the big one!

    Hc260 planer needs fixing

Have you opened the switch block to take a look? They are not designed to be opened, but I had a problem with mine a year or so ago, and I opened it up and whilst I can’t remember exactly what the fault was, it was very trivial and mechanical rather than electrical. worth a look I reckon.

Then I would run it outside and not bother with the earth spike. Your instructions book possibly refers to that as a floating earth (read none).

    Generator advice reqd

A lot of generators are designed to be run outside, with waterproof switches etc. you would also import the noise inside. But re earthing, it sounds like you won’t be connecting it to indoor wiring, so the odd tool and temporary lights maybe? If so and the tools have no earth wire, probably...

    if you could....

Mike Collins, the Apollo 11 astronaut that didn’t descend to the moon. His book ”Carrying the fire” is a brilliant very well written book and got me interested in him. Richard Feynman. His books are also well written and don’t waste words. Learnt a lot from some of them, but also have a couple...
