    Festool itch

If you’ve already bought your first item, you already sunk. You’ll get the lot in the end, so you might just as well get it all now,

    New workshop

Lots of good comments already. My two penneth worth having completed a new workshop about a year ago, is that however much time and thought you spend planning the layout, you are bound to want to change at least some of it, I have 3 or 4 fresh cleat rails pretty much all round, mostly above...

    Which Noise cancelling ear defenders?

If you just want to eliminate harmful noise (as opposed to listening to music etc) what does the better job, good passive ear defenders, or noise cancelling devices?

    Who else thinks this?

Might as well rename BBC to Sports channel at the moment, with football, and bat and ball x 2 (cricket and tennis) which means even the new at 10 no longer happens at 10. I am becoming a reluctant Netflix and Amazon user.

    Benchdogs Fence Mk2 query

Glad it's not just me then! Overall it's great. I think I'll just take the last 1mm off the support piece, and cut a piece of ali to a precise 200mm to lay across the support piece just when setting it up.

    Benchdogs Fence Mk2 query

I've recently bought one of these, with the underfence support piece which is 20mm long and attaches to the end of the main fence. It doesn't come with any instructions, and the various youtube guides I've looked at numerous times don't solve my fundamental issue with it. The intention is that...

The living hell of dust extraction diameters

I have an old Bosch handheld electric plane (which I haven’t used for a decade). I went to use it recently for some rough stuff until I saw that the extractor port is rectangular,! That defeated me

Domino Jointers Are they really worth it, or just a gimic

I've never owned a biscuit jointer, but have had a Domino 500 for a couple of years. 18 months ago I used it to join several railway sleepers which my wife wanted to rearrange to make some bit raised borders on a concrete pad. I only used the dominos as a means to keep the sleepers in a line so...

    New home workshop! (LBC)

Looks lovely. I was born and brought up in Leicester - but nothing like that bit!!! I'm a real fan of doing the insulation nerdily - get it right and your tools won't rust! But when you say you don't want to disturb what it looks like from the outside, what do you have in mind for the windows...

New Workshop Build - Advice and opinions welcome!

I have some very recent experience of this, albeit on a bigger build. My old workshop was in two adjoining stables, each just big enough for one horse I reckon. It was cramped and cold, and for processing big stuff, I would have to whell the bandsaw, Planer etc outside. At the same time there...

How can I revive this old french bed frame?

Hi, The Fenman's "elixir" has 4 ingredients that includes meths which will soften/dissolve shellac, and is used when applying shellac. The other ingredients are really about cleaning, or reviving the appearance. If you use his method it is very quick to do, and doesn't remove all the old...

How can I revive this old french bed frame?

If wood was Shellac'd before (rather than modern varnish), and if you would like to shellac it once cleaned up but retaining the patina, then I would defer to 'The Fenman' who amongst other activities restores old sewing machines, with the goal of making them look like they have been really well...

    I've bought a Woodrat

My Little Rat has made many book shelves, shoe racks or anything else with shelves... using sliding dovetails. As long as there are at least 3 shelves, they seem to tolerate astonishing weight with zero sag, I guess because for one shelf to sag, it will be in tension against the slots in the...

    Rust removal by electrolysis

This method of rust removal has worked for me many times. Not everyone will be aware that Washing soda is actually Sodium Carbonate and is cheaper than chips at most supermarkets. Morrisons sell 1kg bags for 69p and you don't need half that much to do the equivalent of Doms hammer and file. The...

    Best way to ease edges?

If wanting to do this to components before assembly, I tend to use the planer withe the fence at 45 degrees. First pass takes of next to nothing. 2nd or 3rd normally does it. Then do all the same number of times. Quick and easy.

    Moss on roof

Our village church had a similar problem with a north facing tiled roof. The architects recommended putting a copper tape along the ridge. The rain runoff then doing the rest. We also have overhead power in the village with bare copper strung along the road. Where that passes over roofs there is...

Bandsaw seems to lack power, knowledge and help would be appreciated

It reminds me of my early days with a bandsaw a few decades ago. I managed to put the blade on "inside out" which means it is effectively running backwards. To check, with the thing turned off, run a finger gently up and down the blade. It should bite into you skin as you go upwards, and not...
