    Suggestions for future heating system

This is very common in Germany. They put some sort of rigid foam on the outside of the building, typically 10cm or thicker, and then they render directly over that. They attach it with some sort of anchors that have large (8cm?) washers. I suppose you would need to do something around the...

Workshop build, wood frame on concrete foundation

The workshop now has a door, 1930s style. Got it cheap off FB marketplace. It is solid hardwood, meranti I think. The stain glass is fake, but a good fake.

The shin pokers have found a purpose, to hold up the back of the bottom shelf of the work benches.

Indeed, he seems impossibly good with that chainsaw. I suppose the laser line is the trick. Looking down from the top, you keep the blade straight by aligning it to the laser right to the bottom.

    Basic skills and ....

One would think that you would protect yourself in order of importance, lungs, eyes, then ears. And yet you see the city workers generating giant clouds of dust cutting concrete and the like wearing only ear protection. I like that jig he pulls out at 1:05. I made a jig like that before I could...

Router lift for horizontal router table

I am sure the incra is nice, but probably a bit more that what I want to spend on hardware. There seem to be a few designs around, it would be nice to hear from anyone that has built one of these, and what are the pro & cons of the various lifts. The Stumpynubs table looks cool with the tilt...

Router lift for horizontal router table

Maybe I wasn't clear. I was thinking to build something like the picture above with the router on its side. The main difference being the surface with the router in it being a bit more substantial. The big question is how to make the lift so that it is easy to finely adjust, and still can be...

Router lift for horizontal router table

I think that is a bit too rich for me. The table I made looked something like this one, the main difference being that the vertical surface with the router in it was about the same size as the horizontal table, and it had a slot about 8" long for the bit to move up and down. I was planning on...

I keep thinking they will be useful for something later, but I bet they just get cut off in the end. I cut the outside ones off the day I put on the tanking slurry.

Router lift for horizontal router table

I used to have a small horizontal router table in my previous shop that I mostly used for mortising to make wood paneling and small cupboard doors. I seem to remember that I saw it in some woodworking magazine, and they called it a mortising table. It had two tables about the same size fixed at...

Roof tiles on a glorified shed - need foundations?

I am relatively new to the UK, so maybe someone can confirm, but I think you are only allowed 2.5m total height if you are within 2m of the boundary. I am currently building a workshop and it is the same deal where I live, lots of older garages/sheds taller than 2.5m right against the boundary...

    Canada 50C/120F

I heard that it broke the Canadian record, but I was quite surprised to hear the previous Canadian record was in Yellow Grass Saskatchewan at 45C in 1937, which also gets down as low as -45C in the winter. I grew up close to there in Regina, which has a record high of 44C and a record low of -50C.

Roof tiles on a glorified shed - need foundations?

I personally would prefer the tiles, they look nicer and last longer. But as mentioned, it means you may need a steeper pitch then most sheds have, and steeper pitch normally means a taller building. I think the steeper pitch with tiles will look much nicer, I am not so fond of buildings with...

Good wood for painting...Good wood for staining

I have found that most softwoods look nasty if you stain them, and as mentioned the darker you try to stain them, the worse they look (although I have not tried alder). However, you can add color and make softwood look very nice with orange shellac. It is also possible to tint it with aniline...

Is it time for a table saw?

I made some built-ins and wainscoting out of recycled floor joists. I found that no matter how careful I was, I never seemed able to remove every nail, or rather every piece of a nail. I cut the wood on a table saw with a carbide tooth wood-with-nails type blade. I also skimmed the surfaces...

Best tool to cut thin metal trims at speed?

I had one of these, which I used for metal roofing work. It has a left and right shear and takes a strip out of the middle so it does not bend the work. Mine had a cord. I remember it was fast and easy to use.

Ridge tiles. Lucky I have lots of old broken bricks kicking around.

Workshop build, wood frame on concrete foundation

Although there is no counter batten, if you look carefully you can see there are little spacers where the battens are screwed to the joists to let the water drain. Not sure if they are tall enough, but they seemed to work OK when it rained. Playing with mortar now, it is a bit of an art not to...

    Electric vehicles

You can buy them with an electric motor, or install one yourself. Sadly, I decided to sell it when I moved to the UK from Germany, and buy a car instead. If the roads in the UK were as cycle friendly as Germany, I wouldn't need a car.
