How do these cuts not cause kick back?

I guess it depends on how you define it as working well. He got the results he wanted to achieve sure, but as a repeatable process, is it something you want to be doing over and over? If you were making that kind of cut daily, how long do you think it would be before you had an accident...

How do these cuts not cause kick back?

I think he does it the "unconventional" way on purpose. Perhaps to attract attention to the video? (which he's successfully done here :) ) Personally, I would just use a jigsaw though. And if the lines had to be straight, maybe a jigsaw guided by a fence? I think another way is with a track...

How do these cuts not cause kick back?

They absolutely do. You don't always need a fence for a piece to catch.

How do these cuts not cause kick back?

But you can still have pieces fling back if they catch the teeth at the back of the blade as it rotates towards you. Like when you have a small offcut that isn't immediately removed after it has come free. So seems like a similar thing could easily happen here. I.e the piece rotates by a tiny...

How do these cuts not cause kick back?

Absolutely, I made that point. But let's not forget, times are changing, and people are getting their information from different sources. There is no reason youtube cannot be a good source of information. The difficulty is assessing what's good and not so good before you're very familiar with...

How do these cuts not cause kick back?

And there lies the problem. Some things are obviously dodgy. Others ... not so much. A good example is climb cutting using a router. If you're new to using a router, it's not obvious that what the operator is doing goes againts the recommend techniques, and you might attempt to copy it in other...

How do these cuts not cause kick back?

I think you're comparing apples to oranges there. His video is educational content. How many new woodworkers do you think might have seen his video and tried to copy what he was doing? ... without even knowing the risks? The experienced woodworker would know its a dodgy cut. The inexperienced...

How do these cuts not cause kick back?

First off, I'm not going to attempt this cut. I wouldn't dream of it. Quite happy to use a jig saw. ...but I want to understand how the piece is not simply flung back? I appreciate that most kick back is caused by the work piece being trapped between the fence and the blade, causing the piece...

    Segeasy Wedgies or Wedges

I don't have any suggestions for buying them, but have you tried printing out the angle, rough cutting, and then sanding up to the lines? assuming it's printed to A5 size or bigger, you can be pretty damn accurate. https://www.blocklayer.com/protractor-printeng.aspx also some templates here :

Brad point bits with accurate tip

I have several sets of Brad Point bits, some expensive, some mid range. But a problem I find with a lot of them is that the tip is not always very central or runs true. I can put the bit in the drill press or on the lathe, and the whole thing runs true except for the point on the end. Which is...

    Ray Keys style smock?

Cheers guys, I know lots of companies make woodturning smocks.... The question was specifically related to trying to find one like in the picture. The giant picture I added in the first post. It literally said it in the title :D

    Ray Keys style smock?

Does anyone know where I can find the type of smock that Ray keys used to wear? I know you can get the Tabard/Apron type thing (lots on ebay), but they don't have the elasticated neck or wrap around the waist.

    Sorby Pro Edge Coarse Belts

can confirm the belts work very well! .. not sure how long they'll last, but it was certainly quicker than the 60grit at removing material as I wanted. I was able to remove the bulk with 36, then progress through 60 and 120...

Do you own this simple dowel jig?

Wolfcraft Dowelmaster might be ok for wide sheet material type joints, but it's going to be difficult to get it working accurately for anything else. It also works by aligning the tool to the dowel itself, which is going to introduce error.

Do you own this simple dowel jig?

It's a shame the DowelMax is not available in the UK. I did look at getting one from the US, but importing costs put me off.

Do you own this simple dowel jig?

Another thing to point out with these dowel jigs is that they're mostly designed for sheet material type joints. Where as the more expensive types like the DowelMax, Joint Genie or Bangood ones are also good at doing furniture type joints. As for the accuracy of the bangood stuff, in my...

Do you own this simple dowel jig?

I think you're right for the most part, but it's all about finding youtubers you can trust for an honest review. I find both HookedOnWood and BischBaschBosch to be very honest and give a review that I would trust. They often give an unfavourable review of bangood products for example. Which is...

Do you own this simple dowel jig?

Accurate, but damn expensive for what it is. Be good if they updated their videos. Always amazes me why manfacturers don't have decent instructional videos for their products. It's incredibly easy to do with just a smart phone. I might be wrong, but I think if you did that, they would...
