    Words you just can't pronounce.

I know someone that pronounces it as 'pacific' One thing that REALLY annoys me is when people add an accent when they pronounce words/place names etc from another language.

    Planing hardwoods

Cheers for the replies, I think I will take a drive down to Essex hardwood offcuts (I'm in Bury St Edmunds) and pick up some of the species mentioned.

    Planing hardwoods

Which of the more common types of hardwood (that are reasonably priced) would you say can be planed rather easily? I have only ever worked with Pine and American white Oak. I find Pine easy to work with, but I don't really like how it looks, and I find Oak very difficult to work with, but I...

    Scones

Top tip. Microwave them for about 15 seconds. SOOOOOO much better. The thought of having cheese with scones makes me physically sick.

Real need / necessity for a block plane

Surely it's mostly about size? If you need to get into a small area, or you want very fine control, a smaller plane might be better than a bigger plane?

Router table and router with lift

I have the Triton and the Kreg plate, works well for me. If you are going to build your own table, make sure it's strong enough. I used 18mm MDF, and it has sagged a fair bit. I will be redoing it at some point, probably with Plywood and some supports underneath.

    Scary Sharpening Tip

So for the sake of discussion, I'd be curious to see your shopping list (with urls) Here would be the abrasive paper route : Float Glass : https://www.workshopheaven.com/float-gl ... -10mm.html (£25) 40 Micron (~300 grit) : https://www.workshopheaven.com/3m-lappi ... o-psa.html (£3) 12 Micron...

Do you mean diamond stones? Other than waterstones I don't know of other systems that have such high grits.

    Scary Sharpening Tip

Yeah, the name is stupid. Whilst using abrasive paper to sharpen is nothing new, the accessibility/affordibilty to such fine grades is (the silly low micron ones) So I consider it an improvement to an old technique, using better materials. Sent from my SM-J510FN using Tapatalk U

The Axminster AC216TS thread - impressions and tips etc.

You might want to take a look at the manual (on the Axminster site) There doesn't appear to be any threaded holes on the front, only the sides. So you would have to mount extension wings, and then mount the fence rail to the wings. ..or drill and tap your own holes.

    Scary Sharpening Tip

Fair enough. I've always been very careful NOT to get the adhesive wet as I just assumed it would stop it from sticking. So it was one of those, ... "god damnit! I've been doing it wrong all this time" moments

    Scary Sharpening Tip

Yep - I've noticed the rust too. For the lower grits, I don't use 3M, but this stuff, mostly beacuse I already had it. I do wipe it dry after each use, but there must still be tiny filings stuck in the abrasive, as the paper has turned a rusty colour. This doesn't seem to be a problem with the...

    Scary Sharpening Tip

I've never had much luck doing that. The friction between the chisels and the paper seems to be greater than that of the paper/water/plate, and it slides all over. It also seems to cause it to roll up.

    Scary Sharpening Tip

Just watched this video by Jonathan Katz-Moses where he's just discovered the 'Scary Sharpening' system (has he been living under a rock?) ... anyway, he pointed out that if you spray the plate first with water, it gives you a chance to not only reposition the adhesive backed abrasive, but also...

    Geography

My father (and brothers) have an amazing sense of direction, even for places they rarely visit. Me - not so much. They other day one of the roads I take to work was closed, and I genuinely had no idea which way to go. Had to follow those big green boards on the sides of the road, with the...

    Vice types and selection.

I have a small bench and previously had a York 9" (non quick release) vice, specifically this one. Asside from the fact that it was WAY too bulky for my little bench, not getting quick release was a big mistake. So I am now selling it, and have instead picked up one of these. Much more...

    Sub £30 wet/dry vacuum cleaners

Fair enough, I hadn't noticed the micron rating. The point was, having local chip extractors (as opposed to vacs), rather than one large extractor and lots of pipework. Doesn't need to specifically be the one I linked to, others exist, such as this
