    Mini indoor "kiln"

Thing is though, on these blanks, it's not actually the pith area that has cracked. The pith is fine, it is the outside edges leading to the pith that have cracked. A bit like this (not my photo) Or did you mean the pith area will crack once roughed out?

    Mini indoor "kiln"

Yes, most of them appear to have the pith, or are very close to it. - Anchor seal even after rough turning? - Slow dry as in just leaving in a box of shavings? or should I also apply the heat lamp? I'm thinking something like below?

    Mini indoor "kiln"

I've recieved a lot of green Oak beams offcuts (some 4x4" and some 5x5"). Some of it has some knarly cracks, and some of it is currently crack free. My plan to make the most of it, is to rough turn it into box/vase/hollowform blanks before it cracks any more. I'm wondering what would be the...

Nope, I was just talking about traditional tools. Sorry for the confusion

    Turning tools

Are they that expensive? when you consider the costs of buying the raw steel and that they're made in the UK (for most brands), they're not so bad. Also don't forget that you need to heat treat it too if making them yourself. For most hobbyists, a new turning tool will probably last them a...

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

I guess my thinking with the Tormek was that it would be quicker as given that it's cutting at a faster rate than hand stones (a powered strop wheel evenmore so), instead of having to work up the grits with stones, you can just go straight to the honing wheel each time. And as the honing wheel...

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

When you're making small talk with the barber, taxi driver, grandchildren etc does it inevitably end up with you letting them know you free hand sharpen? 😁👍

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

I was watching a video the other day where the presenter was talking about how people who free hand sharpen always like to bang on about it. I'm not sure he was right though.

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

You make it sound like its something that is against the rules. Are sharpening questions disallowed because some members get a little excited? 🤔🙂

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

I have several old variable speed motors. I think I might buy something like Axminster Craft Leather Honing Wheel 200mm and just have a play. A cheap enough experiment :)

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

Appreciate the comments guys! Shame about the completely irrelevant ones though. But I guess thats always going to be the case with a sharpening thread.;) The feedback I am getting is that very few people actually use it as a onestop tool for grinding and then honing and then back to work...

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

Doesn't really answer why its good enough for carvers but not for planes/chisels though.

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

Thanks for the replies. So basically, you're saying that the switch from the 1000 grit wheel to the honing wheel is too much of a jump? So although you might get a polished edge (and more importantly sharp, dull chisels can be polished too) from the honing wheel, it won't be as flat as what you...

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

I had a question regarding the Tormek T4. If you were to sharpen a plane blade on it : 220 primary bevel 1000 secondary bevel And then honed using the leather wheel and honing compound (8000) Do you think that produces an edge comparable to 8000 grit water stones? I.e could it replace your...

Anyone do any fluting/shaping with a router?

Does anyone do any shaping with a router on the lathe? I've seen jigs like the one below which use a fence that the router sled follows to cut straight flutes at a fixed depth. I've also seen jigs that instead of a fence to follow, use a depth stop around the cutter to only allow the cutter to...
