    How flat is "flat"?

Even if you did get it within 0.1mm of flat, it's going to skew as soon as you start putting clamps on it. I think square is super important, as it ties everything togeather. Can't think of a reason where flat is that important, and can using be pulled into place (at least aesthetically) in...

Guys, the lack of custom Avatars is disappointing!

    New forum format

Really liking the new look! Also - who reads forums on mobile?! ... good lord. I'd rather wait until I am sat at a desktop. Although I must admit, I do post from my mobile as it's easier when you need to add images.

    Honing Guides

It seems you really can't beat the old style Eclipse honing guide in terms of simplicity in construction, ease of use, and cost. But don't listen to anyone that says the the newer copies are all they same. They certainly are not! ... I have a £10 one, and one I bought from Axminster. They're...

    Table Saws -again!

Nothing wrong with that., I've done it in the past. I just prefer the adjustable guides.

    Table Saws -again!

There is that option too. But at £10, I think they're well worth it. Just noticed they also do a 450mm one for £13.

    Table Saws -again!

I don't think the slots would be your main issue, it's the material used for the runners. Most people use a hardwood which is bound to change unequally along it's length unless you have very straight grain. Having said that, if you do use two runners, and there is no noticable play along the...

    Car hand controls

I am a paraplegic, and have the same setup. Can't really comment on how it compares to driving normally as I was injured before learning to drive.

    Gouge Profiles

There are two main grinds : Traditional : This is basically just rolling the tool along it's length (in a v block jig for example) Swept Back (comes under many names) : This involves a more complex action of rolling and angling the tool at the same time, which most people use a finger...

A good hardwood for practicing on?

I did this exact thing a few months ago. My experience was a little different ... I asked the owner if he had an offcuts pile and he pointed me to selection of fairly random sized pieces with a few defects (not bad), and some minor cracking etc. None of it was priced up. Based on what I have...

    Sorby pro sharpening system

Agreed. But for this task (grinding a negative rake profile) you have to remove a significant amount of material to get the two planes to meet to form an edge. I had a similar situation with a 1/2" Record Power bowl gouge, grinding to a swept back profile. Takes forever.

Something I've been meaning to do

I'm glad I read this. I don't think I would have been smart enough to know not to just stick the Jacobs chuck directly into the headstock without securing it.

What belts are people using for fast stock removal? I've recently bought some scrapers that I want to turn into negative rake scrapers (they're quite chunky), and after about 20 minutes using the 60grit Ceramic belts, I was about 30% of the way there, I got bored and retired it for another...

The Veritas Large Router Plane - an idiosyncracy

I believe it's simply a side effect of the locking mechanism. It clamps onto the threads, so if you undo it, and then do it up again, the slight force applied probably engages at a different point on the threaded section, so it rotates a small amount and adds a little more depth. Or it could...

    Float glass or similar

I was just wondering if someone had come across something the size I was after. The glass shelf is a good call. I had of course thought about going to a glazier but don't have one local, so thought I'd ask first. Sent from my SM-J510FN using Tapatalk

    Float glass or similar

I've been trying to find something very flat I can use to attach abrasive to for sharpening. I know a lot of places that do the scary sharp systems sell sheets of float glass, but they're always quite big, enough to fit several sheets. I want something about 100x250mm, so only enough to just fit...
