    Poor man's sliding table

I'd sack that photographer then. Given a few of them are out of focus

I was waiting for someone to say No.7 :p

    Disc sander issues

I wouldn't be without my disc sander. It's a very useful machine that is easy to use and gets the job done fast. It does have it's drawbacks though - narrow working area. For a 12" machine, it's only safe to use about 5 1/2", else you risk those god awful scary "kick backs". I do have the...

    Smoothing curves

If you want to go the electric route and don't have a drill press or drum sander, you could knock some of these up.

So what do you call those very long hand planes with the large surface area? :)

    Bench top jointer

I'd argue Jointer makes more sense than Planer. As you're generally flattening, to then make an edge perpendicular to it for jointing. Planer : To make a face flat, and/or to make one edge perpendicular (or some other angle) to a face. Thicknesser : Used to either bring material down to a...

    Disc sander issues

Just checked mine, and it does appear to have the same issues. I measured this with an adhesive disc attached though, so bear that in mind. - My disc does have a slight dish in the center, about 0.5mm. I don't see this as an issue though as I generally only use half the disc, and the result...

    Disc sander issues

0.5mm is probably within tolerance to be fair. Most people use velcro to attach their discs, which is going to have that amount of play all by itself. You could account for the concave by maybe sticking a thin paper shim in the middle. But the woble is the more concerning part. I'll take a look...

Was all that timber prepared using your P/T or are you using it as is?

    Builders sand / sharp sand

No idea to be honest. I'll try some plasterers sand as from memory, that was one of the products that looked the right colour. I only dismissed it because of the name, and the fact that I wanted something more coarse.

    Builders sand / sharp sand

95% of it is fine. It's just in one corner where the pointing has failed. :(

    Builders sand / sharp sand

The only reason I used sharp sand is because the existing pointing mortar is quite "bitty/course", not smooth, so I guessed they orginally used sharp sand, but not sure. I was trying to match what was already there, which I guess is more tricky than I thought.

    Disc sander issues

I have the Record DS300. It's a solid machine and mine runs very true, but .... - The mitre gauge was way out of square, replacement mitre gauge was probably worse. I gave up with them - The table mechanism arrived completely seized, ill fitting parts that had been forced into place. I filed...

    Builders sand / sharp sand

I picked up some sharp sand the other day to mix with some cement to make up a mortar to fix the pointing around some patio paving slabs. I noticed straight away that the sand seemed very red, and would actually stain your finders orange if you touched it (it was very damp), but thought I would...

    Disc sander issues

Record have a 5 year warranty, I would personally go straight to them assuming you registered the product? They might send you back to the retailer, but at least you'll get a reasoanbly quick response (I always do)

Just Seen This in an Advert

I'm trying to think of a situation where it would speed things up. - If you're making more than a few cuts of the same length, a stop block would be much quicker and more accurate. - If you're only making a few cuts of the same length, does it take longer to setup and configure than just using...

    Bench top jointer

No doubt it will do the job for some just fine, and I hope it works for you. The only reason I replied to your comment was because you made it out like I was doing something wrong, or incapable of setting things up properly... yet you managed. "if you're capable of tightening a nut."...

    Bench top jointer

I didn't need to look for light under the straight edge, I could visibly see the error. Anyway, either you got lucky, or I got unlucky, but the reviews of the Sliverline version (looks to be pretty much the same machine) seem to agree with what I have been saying. No point in reading Rutlands...

    Bench top jointer

Maybe what we call acceptable tolerances are different? but I was simply using a straight edge resting on the outfeed to check that the gap was even along the infeed table and it rarely was without lots of fettling, which makes the whole machine kind of pointless other than for very rough...

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

In regards to the wax, neither of your suggestions will work unfortunately. What you really need is this! ;)
