    Shooting board help

Si, I cant add much other than to say that I was in exactly the same boat as you with my first shooting board. I'd run the plane up, get a huge thud and everything stopped. Fixes are: Make sure the iron is really sharp. Make sure the iron is at right angles to the work. This is an accuracy...

    working with yew

Thanks fellas. Yes the wood will be flat effectively like a window board. Great news about its stability, the last thing I want is to get it exact, and then find it shrinks badly. Sanding is fine by me, and I like the idea of waxing it .. easily renewable. So thanks again, the aggregate...

    working with yew

Fellas, I got a small project to do for a friend. The piece of Yew in the photo will be cut to set in the base of the aperture in the wall against which it is resting. My plan is to set a few crosswise battens in the aperture, then peg and glue the Yew down to those battens. I then plan to...

    Cleaning minefield

I wouldn't use linseed oil for cleaning, but if you have the timber reaqdy for finishing then Linseed oil is great.I use BLO since it dries quicker. You can mix it it with white spirit. I understand that this thins the oil down, aids penetration, and then the white sprits evaporate off leaving...

    cutting mitres for picture framing

long time coming, but I have a solution. Last summer when he was turning up an Oak handle for me for an old Yankee screwdriver, Musicman showed me his veritas shooting board plane. Instant envy. Having a bad back convinced me that the Series 2 (that pinnacle of British off road engineering) had...

    Sawmill/timber near Birmingham

Try an outfit called Good Timber, used to be in Weedon in Northants, they have now moved to Bromsgrove (I think). You can go and sort through their stock of timber or order on the web.....

    8 Piece Marples turning set

Hiya folks , I dont do any lathe work, but I'm asking for a friend. He has the offer of 8 Marples tools in their original cardboard box. They look unused and manufacture date seems to be 1976. If they are '76 vintage would that make them worthwhile British made good steel or would they be...

    Hayward Workbench Build - Finished!

Bodgers, apologies if someone has already mentioned this, but I recall early in the thread that you expressed an intention to paint this bench? To my mind it would be a shame to cover up that beautiful timber and more importantly evidence of your incredible handiwork with paint. Anyway all...

Makita LS1019L Mitre saw - anyone have an opinion?

LoNs, couple of questions - did you look at the small Kapex KS60, its a lot cheaper but I saw one at Axi and it looked really good, of course if you need the capacity of the bigger saw then it's a non starter. When you say you did a deal with Axi, did they do a deal on price? From time to time...

    Makita RT0700 vs Katsu Routers

Rutlands have a deal on the katsu, or what I think is the Katsu at the moment. https://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+precision ... 000?tyah=y looks like a saving of a tenner over the usual market price.

Need some advice on jointer planes

I'm with mikeg on this. Getting a long board edge flat and square is no mean feat. The internet gurus make it look easy but it isn't. I progressed in steps... First I managed to get the edge smooth. Then after more practice I managed to get it straight along its length. Next comes getting the...

Anvil ironmongery, poor screws and customer service

They don't want to fix the problem, they want you to go away. If a trader treated me like that, they would never get my custom again, and I would tell as many people as I could, not to trade with them.

Thanks to all who have taken the time to reply, I will ring a couple of those suppliers this morning, there is one castor that looks promising.

    alternative to castors

Thanks Bill, it'll have to be those or something very like them. I may give the company a call to see what else they offer.

    alternative to castors

Folks I am making a moveable reception desk. I plan to use castors and set them in such a way that they will be virtually invisible by being shrouded by timber which will reach to within a few millimetres of the floor. All well and good, but I need a way to immobilise the desk when in use. I...

    Apothecary chest

Absolutely glorious,. a real inspiration. My vote would be for the timber knobs, to me the metal ones are a bit harsh on the softer tones of the wood. But whichever way you go, the end result looks great.

looking for someone to turn up a handle for me.

Gentles all, I am looking for a favour. I need a new handle for one of my Stanley Yankee screwdrivers. The old one split, was epoxied on, but ultimately split again. Would anybody be inclined to turn me up a handle? If there are any volunteers I'll send you a block of Oak or Ash or something...
