    Geared sanders eg. Rotex

folks I am contemplating buying a Rotex or the equivalent Bosch or Makita. I already have a festool ETS something.. an ROS with a 5mm orbit. I fancy the Rotex because I've seen reviews that suggest that in geared mode it is capable of removing quite a bit of stock.. somewhere between an ROS and...

Yep, though the real mess, the day before, was the bits of plasterboard that I had to hack out of the wall...

    Oak cross

Been a long time coming, but all done now. It may not look it from the photo, but the foot of the cross is 4ft off the floor and the cross itself is over 10ft tall and a bit less than 6ft in width. The wall I had to fix to was block faced with plasterboard, with a 12mm void behind the board...

    Natural dyes

Forgot about the mordant process, yes she has to do that to fix the dye. From what I have seen nothing she is doing would be a strong colour, so if a paler colour fades even more, I guess this is a dead end, thanks

    Oak cross

Fellas, not ignoring you all. I got the Oak from English Woodlands per Custard's recommendation. They are a very helpful and knowledgeable crew. Got exactly the timber I needed and their guidance was extremely helpful. Also the place is a wonderland if you work with wood.. they have loads of...

    Natural dyes

Guys and Gals, just a quick question... My wife is heavily into stitching things and other cloth based activities. She has developed this into the dying of fabrics with vegetable dye. She makes them out of fruit, leaves and bark. (The kitchen resembles an alchemists workshop, so she is getting...

Fellas, thanks for your input, that gives me a lot more confidence re movement. Custard, great advice as usual, I appreciate your taking the time to reply.. same goes for yetloh and yojevol of course. I may well use English Woodlands, I have family down south so it would be a good opportunity...

Saker Angle Measuring Tool · Universal Angularizer Ruler

Ive ordered one now. There is an alloy one at £23 odd, but as you say at £3 or so it's not worth messing around with. I might make own some time, but I'll see how I get on with this one first. Thanks all

Saker Angle Measuring Tool · Universal Angularizer Ruler

Has anyone bought one of these? https://www.homiepie.co.uk/collections/ ... 9431575626 I could really use one, but I don't want to buy junk. I've looked at other more familiar tool sites and can't find anything similar? Is this one worth it? Grateful to hear from anyone who has one... Thanks

    Oak cross

Gentles all, I am to make a Large Oak cross for our local church. I have prototyped it in pine to get the size and proportions right. Folks have decided that they want it 9'6" high with a 5'6" crosspiece. Timber will be Oak, desired size very close to 7.5" x 2". A few questions if you will...

    Could come in handy? asvert;

I also wonder about the lateral pressure on the bearings of the drill. The drill is designed to take load along the axis of the bit, I doubt it is designed to take load across that axis. I may be completely wrong, but I bet they would wear out your drill before its time.

    Banana pine.

Twas all the rage in the 80s. One of the few decent woods stocked by Jewson's etc. I think there was a catchline on one advert that portrayed a customer asking at B&Q or somewhere... 'Got any Parana, mate?'

Making a very long slim wedge or fillet..

Got to say thanks for the advice. I glued an over wide section of oak to a bit of softwood, making sure that I left about half the width of the Oak unglued. Marked the fillet on the edge of the Oak, put it in my vice, and planed to size. Got a perfect shape, tapering to zero. Then cut the...

Making a very long slim wedge or fillet..

Thanks fellas, I really appreciate your input, I'll try the planing route as my TS has a rip blade and as someone mentioned, I doubt the pointed end would come out as good as it would need to be, thanks again

Making a very long slim wedge or fillet..

I'm not sure fillet is the right term, but here goes. I need to make a piece if timber circa 10mm wide. It needs to be 5mm high at one end tapering down to 0mm at 12in. Is there an easy way to do this? I'm thinking of making up some sort of jig for my table saw and cutting it from wider stock...

    working with yew

Thanks to all who helped me out here. job is all but done, In the end I sanded it through the grades and got a lovely smooth finish. The end grain was easy to plane, and I imagined that the side grain would be as well, but it wasn't at all, I have to revert to sanding for that as well. did some...

    Second Hand/Old Socket Sets

I have some Elora spanners.. been buying them as I need them. I have to say that they are brilliant, better than anything else you can get nowadays. I'm told that SnapOn have declined in quality. The Halfords Professional stuff is really good but doesn't exude the same feel of quality as the...

    Anybody made a coffin?

We have friends who run an old time hardware store. They are also the local undertakers. The coffins are made in a workshop that hasn't changed in 100 years. It is a treasure trove of old (and neglected tools). Nowadays the coffins are bought as kits and assembled. The coffins I see are cheap...

I'm impressed by the fact that he still has two working hands with 4 fingers and a thumb on each.
