    The chucks you linked to not only do they look like they would break easily but would not hold anything accurately. And last but not least they are not suitable for woodturning as they are designed to hold metal so should be avoided at all cost. I would not even buy one of those for a metal...

    A screw chuck is a safe way to turn a piece of wood if used correctly the same as a chucking point in the jaws

    The idea of the groove around the screw is so that the inside of the jaws locates in there and prevents it from being forced/pulled out of the chuck it is a safety thing

    The screw fits on the chuck with the jaws in place the slote around the thickest part is where the jaw inner plates fits into it.     All those that i posted of the snap on are for cutting threads I do have some of snap on thread repair nots which are as you said are different. It may be a design that you may not have seen before.

    If you remove the cover to the belt change compartment there is a couples of flats on the shaft for a spanner then place a piece of wood in the chuck jaws to undo it

    Make sure that you have not pushed any rust and other rubbish into the bottom as that will also prevent the screw from going in fully

    I have just checked mine with my taps and the screws that attach the jaws to the carriers are 5 X 0.8 metric threads. Make sure that you check the tap and dies as there is also a 5 X 0.9
