    Bowl Size Ponderings

For decorative type bowls I mainly stick to about 9" as they tend to end up on a shelf and even with a stand they fit just right. Larger bowls tend to be used for fruit. I do the odd large pieces but they tend to be decorated and stood on stands as a centre piece.

Record CL3 play on headstock .. I think

I use Sae 30 oil as recommended by one of their agents I brought a eye dropper bottle (Glass) and add 3 drops at the beginning of a session of turning. This prvents over oiling as well as making it easy to apply the oil without getting everything covered, If you get oil spraying out while...

PPE for turning - concerns over the PAPR masks

I use the Axminster type and found it very good the only thing that I tend to avoid is MDF all other woods seem to be OK and as for impact I have only ever had one piece of wood fly off the lathe which hit me full face on and the shield stopped it without any damage to the mask it did however...

    Skewed

I use a diamond card to touch up the edges on mine little and often if it needs more work then O put it an the grinder to shape it and then return to using the card. Mine very rarely goes near the grinder now

    Workshop cleaning.

I use second hand henry hoses that lead up to places where I need to clean like you. These are fixed around the workshop and when needed the one from the vac is just pushed in the end something like a dust extraction ducting but with flexible ends

    Morse taper on a chuck

    And also used for that;)

    Morse taper on a chuck

That is an metal working chuck not for woodturning it fits onto a backplate via the three threaded holes you can see that in turn is normally fitted to the lathe by a thread. The jaws on this chuck will not hold wood very secure as there is very little bearing surface for them to grip on(wood...

    Log sealing

Some times even with the most care in sealing the wood it will still split, this is just down to the type of wood. I tend to leave most of my logs as long as I can and seal the ends, they can still split but I have found that this mostly only splits at the end I just cut that off after leaving...

    Warping of workpiece

I agree that sanding can cause this problem, Once you have turned and sanded the outside how long is it before you notice the variation in the size is it immediately after turning the outside or do you turn the outside and return the following day to hollow the inside

    Wood turning - getting started.

I agree as soon as you can take some lessons even though you have some knowledge of other woodworking experiences. I like the Versa chuck as well but also have heard good reports on the Axminster chucks even though they are expensive worth buying good quality to start with. Not having the pro...

What unnecessary extra nice to have tool would you buy if you had £100 only.

If I did not need it why would I want to buy it. I need a new lathe but £100 will not buy that

What are these called and where can I buy them?

Making them yourself sounds like a good idea but remember that they could be hardened against wear so using some studding may not be ideal. Look at the way the originals have worn. So buy some which are correct if possible

Thread adapter for mini chuck queries.

What chucks do you have for both machines if axminster then a small set of O'Donnell jaws would be a better option. If not the MT route would be the better option but make sure you can put a draw bar in. That would be of no use as the OP wants to work on the internal surface

Great job. They are enjoyable to make, I made my first one quite a few years ago and certainly have to remember the corners flying about;)

    Texturing kit

It all depends on what effect and colours I want sometimes I will colour after the texture then dry brush the high spots, but if I want wood to show in the texture I will paint first then texture this leaves the hollows wood coloured and the high spots in the colour of my choice. There are so...

    Texturing kit

I have the Robert sorby texturing tool and find it easy to use, having said that like most tools you are not familiar with a little practice helps. I have also used the spiraling part of the set I have and this does take a little more practice than the texturing part. People do use them with...
