    Tea lights

Thank you. I never make them without the inserts, well worth bringing that up as new turners may try without

    Collet chucks-opinions

I use the two bars and just pinch up the wood in mine because anything you are chucking up tend to be on the smaller size you don't need much pressure with the tools to cut it too shape, if you find it is starting to move in the chuck then just give it a small tighten with the bars

    Collet chucks-opinions

I have this one and find it very good for my needs mine originally came from Axminster tools but they no longer do this model. With mine it can fit either a 1" X 8 or an 3/4" X 16 I would avoid MT taper fitting ones unless you have a through hole to lock it in place with a draw rod

Weekly Discussion Topic - Week 5 - Hybrid (wood /resin etc)

Not something I have had to do but HERE is a video of a well known turner of hybrid blanks George Watkins of From the Tree. I have turned and finished acrylics and other man made blanks and I finish these using micromesh and water followed by a burnishing cream but not sure about cross contamination

    Textured Blue piece

thank you Robbo3 and dickwilly. I never use to paint or decorate mine but now enjoy doing so but only to plain wood if I get something that is highly figured I will think twice before applying any colour unless it is to enhance it.

    Textured Blue piece

I really need a name for this one. This piece is based on work of Mark Sanger. And not from the recent article in the magazine as I had already started before it came out. Not really got a name yet but sure it will come. Turned from a piece of quite plain Walnut. Texture applied with a power...

Ash bowl end grain tearout options

As per Chas's answer something to bind the fibres together which will help support them tear out like you have is more common in very dry wood. And if need be sharpen the tool every cut across the effected area. I turn some very punky wood which this happens to and I do as discussed even to the...

Weekly Discussion Topic - Week 4 - Tools!!!!!!!!

You can't go far wrong learning with the basic tools and then buy tools as you need them and not just because everyone else has brought them which many will end up sitting on a rack not getting used that much

    Drive Centres.

It is called a ring centre an is very useful where a point is not required as it will not push into the wood as far as the pointed type. Also is it is hollow it can be used with an auger type bit designed for the lathe so it enables you to drill down the centre of a piece of wood to make...

Weekly Discussion Topic - Week 4 - Tools!!!!!!!!

Not that many. My most used tools are what I would call the basic ones. My rack looks a bit small compared to that on but what is not seen is another 20+ tools like threaders, texturing and a few other specialist tools as well as some small ones I also have a set of carbide tipped tools that...

Weekly Discussion Topic - Week 3 - Christmas

Carving is not that difficult it is setting out the letters so that it looks right is the answer. Yes a steady hand when carving does help. I produced these by using carving chisels

    Tyme cub keeps tripping out

Something worth checking is the motor and switch to see if there is excess build up of dust. Look for any damaged wires while you are there

    New woodturner - lathe recommendations

Well worth going there and also gives you the chance to look at lathes. Do not go for the one you spoke about in your first post. Starting with the wrong type of lathe can soon make your son get very down hearted and give up where as a decent lathe is more likely to encourage him. As mentioned...
