    Imperial drill bits

The plans I am working from only state imperial fractions for hole sizes and also all other measurements are also imperial it is just a pain having to convert to decimal inch measurements. This also includes the reaming sizes

Squirrels. Love ‘em or hate ‘em?

Squirrels are not the problem bloody cats are our enemy, is there an open season on cats yet. Why people have to keep them I do not know as many seem to put out food for them and then let them roam at will and never see them from one meal to the next

    Drill Sharpening

A little long winded but worth a watch This Old Tony I can sharpen my drill bit freehand but the bits seem to be getting bigger before I can do so now as the smaller ones are not easy on the eyes. And just when I thought I cracked it I am now learning about negative rake grinds on...

    16er inserts?

ER collets are for holding the work instead of a chuck they have a very limited holding range each one is marked 1.5-2 for example that is the diameter they can hold you buy they individually or as a set. They have nothing to do with the pitch. As far as I know there is not one marked with 1.45...

    Live centre suggestions

I think you will find the end in the centre is a straight piece as it needs to fit into bearings. It may not end there as it could also have a groove for a circlip of similar you can buy blank end MT arbours which possibly need turning down to size so may make it cheaper to buy a new one, that...

What a difference a few microns make - Numpty Award

It is surprising how accurate you can turn a piece on a lathe especially if you use the cross slide at a small angle and adjust that. also it makes no difference how big something is turned you still can measure to that degree. Deema did you allow the part to cool down and take a spring pass

Is there a standard for pen turning bushes?

It all depends on the pen kit and where it is from as the bushes are drilled out (As already stated) with either a 1/4" hole of a 6mm. Some that I have brought in the past from Axminster tools have had the 6mm which I drilled out to 1/4" as that is my mandrel size. I have however gone to turning...

    Milling job required Manchester

Cutters are not that expensive so by the time you have driven or sent the steel off you could have brought a cutter and use the lathe to mill it

    Micrometer break in?

Like J-G explained I sometimes just use one finger to turn the barrel when holding the mic and the object because I am only using one finger there is only so much pressusre turning the barrel that it is always the same giving a true reading. This is assuming that the mic is free turning and does...

    Lathe for a beginner

remember that the larger the lathe the heavier it is mine took 5 strong men to lift onto the base if you don;t have enough people to lift you will either need to buy or hire lifting equipment. If attached to a cabinet then some sort of moving skates if the workshop is easy to access

    Lathe for a beginner

As AES above knowing what kind of work you want to do as well as a rough guide to how much you want to spend. I have just started and went for a Warco WM280v which is a reasonably large lathe and I can see it doing everything I want of it I doubt at this time that I will use it's full capacity...
