    Spinning Through the Wood Pile

I have seen what could possibly be a couple of pieces that have some signs of splits. But maybe able to cut those out

    Spinning Through the Wood Pile

I must confess that the bottom shape I am not sure about on a lidded piece but as a bowl yes it would work well for me that is  Even so it is good to see you doing some turning. All I have been doing is cutting yew into bowl rounds so I have plenty of 12" blanks from 2 1/2" to 4" thick...

What to pay for green wood?

There is no hard and fast price. I sometimes get wood free which may include a complete trunk and I am talking up to 18" + diameter. On the other hand, I have made something for the wood and occasionally I pay anywhere from £20 upwards depending on the type of wood and the size. I have not...

    Tool rack

Kept these simple and using odd bits of pine furniture that I recycle. The good thing about making them hold just the ten in each is that they are not too heavy to lift down as they are held up using the french cleat system.

    Tool rack

I keep moving a pile of woodturning tools around the workshop these are my least used ones so thought it about time I built an extra rack to put them up on the wall, now I have no more wall space left. I also have another cupboard where the door is holding yet more tools which ideally I would...

    new lathe time this year

Will be interested in any answers as I have been looking at the Stratos FU-230 Woodturning Lathe with the extras so that I can up my turning as it would be heavier than what I have at the moment

    Small yew Bowl

I can do simple    I felt that this piece did not need anything but a simple form to show off the wood it also has a nice feel in the hands not just the shape but the weight as well, a little heavier than my normal turning

    Streaks

+1 for Paul Hannaby and CHJ's post above about torn grain. Both remedies are very valid as well as water as CHJ's post try thinned cellulose sander sealer to support the fibres either of the three suggestions will work. By learning to turn it out rather than sanding it will give you a better...

    Sit down lathe?

The problem of working in a seated position is the lack of movement you will have which would mean the modifying of tools as well as finding a lathe to work at. I have arthritis of the spine but still, stand at the lathe I just take a rest more often than what I use to. I do now decorate much...

    Autumn

Thank you. The feet are simple to do just turn a ring on the bottom making sure that when you remove the centre material that it is the same depth as that on the outside of the ring. Now remove the parts of the ring to leave three feet you will need to do some hand sanding here to blend it all...

    Breaking my heart

My two sheds of wood may not be as big as a shipping container but they still hold plenty of wood and these were taken before I filled the gaps with a load of yew and walnut. The logs stacked outside are still to be processed they are bottom yew and top three Holly which originally cut down...

    Autumn

I was not sure about the pattern to start with but when applying the last coat of finish a friend came in and asked how much when I told them they brought it before the varnish had dried need I have worried. This measures 8" X 2" made from field maple sprayed with ebonising spray and the leaves...

    Breaking my heart

Two sheds full of blanks and still can't find one of the right type of wood or correct sizes that I want. There must be over 200 blanks either bowl or spindle this is going to break my heart as I just may have to go and buy some unless I can get some sycamore

Post a photo of the last thing you turned (!)

This is an advantage of rough turning you relieve the stresses within the wood which means it has done most of the moving so that if you do need to remount it is not such a problem. I tend to leave the foot on and leave the piece somewhere I can see it and once happy with the shape then remove...

    Vivarium

There are no cut edges on the inside and there is also a bead of sealer on all of the internal corners. The cut edges that are on the outside will be covered as well but by the new owner
