    Turning

Get the outside flowing first where you can see the shape much more easily and then when you do the inside follow that and replicate the outer shape. It is one of those things that is easier to show someone in person than to write it down. Avoid trying to follow the shape of the blank as this...

    Turning

Very nice but for my personal taste I would liked to have seen a more flowing form where the sides meet the bottom. I am sure that she will be very pleased with it

    Dovetail joint

Most times you can see a jig cut dovetail. I will eventually like to get them as near as perfect as I can as I said plenty of practice.

    Dovetail joint

Yes the board was correctly prepared what you see is a slight mismeasurement by myself one is 1/16th" smaller than the other. (note to self measure twice and cut once  ) The board was originally one piece just cut in half and join ends square. Thank you for your observations Mike. Luckily...

    Dovetail joint

I have not hand cut a dovetail joint of any kind since leaving school quite a few years ago I am now in my 60's, but I have cheated and cut them with a jig and router. I thought that I would have a go as I would like to produce some nice pieces with hand-cut dovetails so today I found a piece...

Storing timber for turning in a log store outside.

That is ideal the roof keeps the rain of and the slatted sides allow for a nice through draft of air

Axminster Trade lathes Middle or High versions

After all the considerations of what Chas stated above have you ever thought about The Stratos lathe the extension can be moved from the end to the side by using the clip on additional piece? I would like to upgrade to a larger lathe but not because I want to turn a lot of larger pieces but to...

    Back at it again

Totally agree with Chas's comment. Glad to see you back at the lathe It was only the other day I was wondering where you had gone. Some fantastic pieces but then I expect nothing else from yourself Kim. While you were away I even managed to get a half descent stained bowl using your technique.

    Spinning Through the Wood Pile

Worth the wait. Like the undercut just adds that nice shadow line

    London Plane Bowl part 2

Use one of the larger screw chucks like a 3/8" one as you need a good fixing and the block you use needs to be large enough so it sits flat against the jaws of the chuck when you move to the offset position

    London Plane Bowl part 2

The blank is mounted to a block of wood in the back I drilled two holes one on centre so the face could be turned as well as the first burnt line. Then a second was drilled 3/4" off centre this is then mounted and the speed lowered on the lathe to prevent vibration and the bowl was turned as...

    Spinning Through the Wood Pile

No but something worth thinking about for a future project

    Spinning Through the Wood Pile

That is one very nicely shaped box Chas. Glad it got stuck before the fan unit, there has been the odd time that a clunk has been heard where something disappeared down the 4" hole of no return

    London Plane Bowl part 2

A second bowl from my London Plane stock, the grain on the blank was fantastic so I kept that on the flat rim otherwise, I would have lost it. It also was fading away on one side so I put that where the thinner part of the rim is. two burnt lines to highlight the rim and the bowl edge. I also...

    Greasing the bearings

Mine is the bronze tapered type I would still not use the 3 in 1 oil. and I would agree with heavier oils/grease for roller type bearings.
