That certainly hits the spot Chas. Like the shape of it now and the lid suits it

    Alternative jaws

I did a search when I needed a new chuck and found the same thing that manufacturers only make jaws to fit their own brand. As well as searching for chucks that could have either an insert or changeable backplate if I decide to change lathes. That is why I went for the Versa chuck on...

    Oh nuts

Not had the chance to work boxwood. As for the balls I have another 18 still waiting so may try one with the threader

    Oh nuts

Not on this one as the apple seemed to hold it with no problems. Will be trying other woods soon to see how they hold up

    Oh nuts

Sat in a draw in the workshop I have a tap and die set for wood which I brought to make something a while ago but it never got used. So I thought that I needed to at least have a go at using it so a simple nutcracker was in order, made from apple for the main body and screw and Oak for the handle.

I think the top is what need the attention so agree cut it off and make a lid to suit would be my choice. a shame as turning is up to your normal high standard.

    Internal shaping?

I am working on a vase type piece of turning at the moment using Oak which is reasonably hard the tool I use without too many problems is the Revolution tool as shown HERE by Mark Sanger who also sells them. You can get a good finish straight off of the tool but it still will need finishing as...

    All in a days work

A little while ago I did someone a favour by turning some knobs and in return, he made me part of a jig for drilling holes for earing stands(the metal parts in the picture). anyway, at last, I got around to using it and these two are the results. They do sit nice and square the photo makes the...

    A new chuck!

All well and good going for chucks with inserts but if a new lathe is brought many of those will not have inserts for the fast becoming common thread of 33 x 3.5mm. There are one or two which will allow for that the Versa chuck I mentioned before being on where a new backplate rather than...

    A new chuck!

It would depend on the lathe it has to fit onto as some of them are just not suitable for smaller lathes. I own a small and a larger lathe. the chuck I favour for the large lathe is my Versa chuck as I can buy jaw carriers for a variety of manufacturers jaws. My smaller lathe will just be happy...

    Hello - Newbie from Scotland

Your tenon needs to be smaller so that when the jaws grip it the form as near a circle as possible, this means that the whole of the jaw is gripping the tenon and not just the corners don't make it too small or the centre of the jaws will be the only part holding or they will not hold at all...

    Blanks?

Your ears will soon become accustomed to the sound of chainsaws, don't be afraid to stop and ask even if it costs you a pint or a bowl it can be worth it. remember that you will need to keep collecting to keep the stocks going as some is drying others will be ready to turn. Learn how to rough...

    Small box

Thank you, Chas and Redkite. ABW does finish nice and gives a nice rich colour without too much in the way of finishes, I must confess that I turned the lid as a pop fit which is something I don't normally do as most are opened with one hand but not a sloppy fit either.

    Spinning Through the Wood Pile

A nice bowl like the decoration around the outside that is the advantage of close-grained wood it takes good detail. the nearest to apple is the ones we just made a crumble from and the missus will not let me near

    Spinning Through the Wood Pile

The cherry still looks great, especially with the inclusions. At least you are turning something I am working on garden projects at the moment. I have just finished the benches which you have seen as well as some digging and putting up a new rotary washing line. And amongst that managed to turn...
